This paper provides evidence in favor of the non-existence of base right-adjunction for adverbs. The argument comes from asymmetries in the interpretation of ambiguous adverbs depending on their position (sentence-internal or sentence-final). The apparent right-adjonction effects will be derived by leftward movement of the modifiees of the adverbs, according to the framework outlined in Barbiers (1995). Prosodic effects that improve some otherwise ungrammatical sentences will be discussed. The conclusion will be that adverbs can be generated in adjacency to the constituents they modify, though prosodic markedness may rescue cases of non-adjacency
