Invisibilidade do Rio Taquari/Rio Grande do Sul (RS): História Ambiental E Vulnerabilidade Aos Eventos Hidrológicos Extremos

Immigrant Youth, Hip Hop, and Online Games: Alternative Approaches to the Inclusion of Working-Class and Second Generation Migrant Teens
Anti-Muslim racism with its attendant xenophobia and (the fear of) Salafist hostility are two of the most essential problems facing Europe today. Both result from the enormous failure of the continents integration policies, which have either insisted on immigrants rigid assimilation or left immigrants to fend for themselves. This book radically breaks with contemporary approaches to immigrant assimilation and integration. Instead it examines non-…
Frontiers of Fear: Immigration and Insecurity in the United States and Europe
Immigrant Youth, hip-hop, and Feminist Pedagogy: Outlines of an Alternative Integration Policy in Vienna, Austria
This article describes a local social work project currently operating in the Viennese suburbs of Austria with second-generation migrant teenagers (who come mostly from working class guestworker families of Turkish and Yugoslav origin). This project which applies feminist pedagogy is successfully providing a platform for underprivileged teens to express themselves through Rap music and hip-hop (by enabling access to the Internet and music studios…
Guest Workers and Immigration Reform: The Rise of a New Feudalism in America
This article argues that if the proponents of immigration reform have it their way, the proposed guest worker program will transform American citizenship from an institution based on civic membership to one based on residence rights and socio-economic status. American citizenship, now a relatively accessible option, will become a closed-off status, unattainable for the majority of temporary workers. With this policy, the United States will create…
Uprooted and Unwanted: Bosnian Refugees in Austria and the United States
The tragedy of war does not end when the soldiers put down their guns. Among the after-effects, the dislocation and relocation of civilians often loom large. The aftermath of the Bosnian conflicts has left many refugees needing to establish new lives, often in radically different cultures. In Uprooted and Unwanted, Barbara Franz offers a cogent look at how these refugees have fared in two representative cities - Vienna and New York City. Between …
Transplanted or Uprooted: Integration Efforts of Bosnian Refugees Based Upon Gender, Class and Ethnic Differences in New York City and Vienna
During their settlement in Vienna and New York City, Bosnian refugees experienced class and ethnic conflicts. While the integration mechanisms of the two host societies differed substantially, Bosnian men and women have developed quite different networks. Bosnian women in the Vienna sample developed often lasting relationships with natives or other non-refugees that eventually led to permanent jobs and rather substantial networks. They integrated…
Bosnian Refugee Women in (Re)settlement: Gender Relations and Social Mobility
Bosnian refugee women adapted more quickly than their male partners to their host environments in Vienna and New York City because of their self-understanding and their traditional roles and social positions in the former Yugoslavia. Refugee women's integration into host societies has to be understood through their specific historical experiences. Bosnian women in exile today continue to be influenced by traditional role models that were prevalen…
Bosnian refugees and socio-economic realities: Changes in refugee and settlement policies in Austria and the United States
Refugee studies scholars have emphasised that refugee law has become immigration law in the North/Western world. This shift in perspective emphasises borders rather than the protection of people. Comparatively little analytical work, however, has been done on the implications these legal and political changes have had on individual refugees. This article addresses some of these effects by comparing asylum, residence, and socio-economic problems o…
