  • East Asia has delinked – can Ethiopia delink too

Francisco Torres Pérez, Francisco Pérez•ARTICLE•Review of African Political Economy•2021•Cited by: 3•References: 6

The possible emergence of a developmental state in Ethiopia has renewed the debate among African activists, scholars and policymakers over how to explain the remarkable success of the ‘East Asian model’. Rapid industrialisation in South Korea, Taiwan and China supposedly invalidates dependency theory, yet Samir Amin’s framework of delinking can better explain the success of these countries than can competing theories of the developmental state, s…

  • The Effect of Rainfall on Migration from Mexico to the United States

    Open Access•Gerónimo Barrios Puente, Francisco Pérez-Soto et al.•ARTICLE•International Migration Review•2016•Cited by: 5•References: 17

There has been very little work on the impact of rainfall on migration from Mexico or even elsewhere. We use satellite data from NASA to examine the effect of the lagged level of rainfall relative to an area's historical average, on migration from small Mexican communities to the United States. Controlling for the level of education, proportion married, and historic migration levels, we find higher levels of rainfall significantly reduce Mexican …

  • After the Nicaraguan Non-Payment Crisis

    Open Access•Johan Bastiaensen, Peter Marchetti et al.•ARTICLE•Development and Change•2013•Cited by: 2•References: 9

This article argues against 'microfinance narcissism' and calls for a re-politicization of the microfinance paradigm. The dominant verdict on microcredit has undergone a damning transformation, from 'magic bullet for poverty reduction' to 'cause of suicide'. Nowadays, both radical critics and mainstream voices deplore microcredit's negative impact on micro-entrepreneurs. They argue for a reorientation where credit is targeted at established small…

  • Robotics, the New Industrial Revolution

Open Access•German Fernandez, Germán Carro et al.•ARTICLE•IEEE Technology and Society…•2012

Robots are becoming an important part of the “new social technology” defined by Hirai [1], where finding a robot in any environment is becoming more common. While we are used to finding robots in different environments such as supermarkets, nurseries (e.g., robotic pets), hospitals (e.g., for surgery), or at home (e.g., vacuuming robots), the environment that still has the most robots is industry (e.g., the automotive industry). For that reason, …

  • A New Interpretation of the Distance Puzzle Based on Geographic Neutrality

    Open Access•Iván Arribas, Francisco Pérez et al.•ARTICLE•Economic Geography•2011•Cited by: 1•References: 59

One of the most remarkable features of globalization is that advances in technology have contributed to reducing the costs of trade (e.g., transportation and communication costs) and thus have boosted international trade. Under these circumstances, the importance of distance should have diminished over time, which would constitute a boon for countries that are far from the main centers of economic activity. However, one of the best-established em…

  • The Financing of Spanish Public Universities

    José-Ginés Mora, José‐Ginés Mora et al.•ARTICLE•European Education•1998•References: 1

The main features of the recent evolution of the Spanish universities are described in this paper. Of the three sets of reforms that are currently in progress (reforms of the teaching process, institutional evaluation, and new financing models) we concentrate on the last one, introducing and discussing some proposals for the financing of Spanish public universities. The first part of the paper shows the recent institutional changes, the evolution…

Francisco Seoane Pérez, Francisco Pérez•ARTICLE•Monumenta Nipponica•1963•Cited by: 1

At the annual convention of the Japanese Society of Medieval Philosophy in 1960, Professor Kawadaa succinctly outlined his conception of the meaning of comparative philosophy. His paper on the theory of ideas of St. Bonaventure opened with an outline of the main kinds of philosophy, as he understands them: viz., the Western types concerned with -o ov and with o cP Hindu speculation centering on sat; the Buddhist philosophy on na sadasat.2 In eluc…
