Global Perspectives on Lead Contamination and Health Risks in Surface Water, Rice Grains, and Soils
Lead (Pb), a pervasive and highly toxic metal, and poses significant environmental and health risks due to its extensive biogeochemical cycling, driven by anthropogenic activities. This review evaluates the health hazards allied with Pb contamination in surface water bodies, soils, and rice grains, based on a comprehensive analysis (2015–2024) of 118, 133, and 102 literature studies, respectively. The year‐wise assessment of Pb concentration in s…
Is Mathematics Like a Game
We re-examine the old question to what extent mathematics may be compared with a game. Mainly inspired by Hilbert and Wittgenstein, our answer is that mathematics is something like a “rhododendron of language games”, where the rules are inferential. The pure side of mathematics is essentially formalist, where we propose that truth is not carried by theorems correspondencing to whatever independent reality and arrived at through proof, but is defi…
Transcending the norm
This paper aims to study the representations of gender and sexuality in English language textbooks used in India for teaching English. We conducted a textbook analysis of Grade 8 National Council of Education Research and Training (NCERT) textbooks using Moore’s taxonomy (Citation2021) and its extended version (as given by the authors) to analyse hetero/non-heteronormativity. A thematic analysis was also conducted to analyse gender roles as portr…

This chapter focuses on the constitutional position vis-a-vis personal laws in India; and discusses how fundamentalist and conservative forces have, over the last fifty years, sought to block attempts to reform Muslim personal law and shows how retrogressive amendments to the law of maintenance were introduced in 1973 and 1986. It discusses some of the debates around the reform of Muslim personal law, and examines the reaction of, both, women's g…

Law, Violence, and the Girl Child
Despite the government's ratification of numerous international treaties that prevent discrimination against the girl child, the 2001 Indian Census figures show a sharp decline in the child sex ratio in many regions in India. The substantive and procedural laws remain antiquated, with very few changes being made. Child marriage, though prohibited by law, continues to exist and is merely unreported. Child prostitution is also prohibited, but traff…

Technology and the Modern Novel
For purposes of initial discussion, technology may be taken to mean applied science, thereby drawing attention to the practical applications of researches and discoveries made by science. This gives technology an importance which is not always fully recognised. Technology entails an enlargement of the apparatus with which man shapes, and is shaped by, his environment. This in turn leads to a modification of the behaviour-pattern defined by an ear…
