“A picture held us captive…”
The article aims to establish how incisive the changes in social reality triggered by the COVID-19 pandemic are. The first part examines the distinctiveness of the current pandemic in comparison with other epidemics, and investigates responses to it from within the humanities. The second part focuses on defining the viable criteria of social change. Two such criteria are provided: change in the world-picture in terms of Ludwig Wittgenstein’s phil…
Everyday life, democracy and education in the age of populism
In our day and age, everyday life has become a receptacle of various spheres of human life and development. Its expansion and current role of the main reference point for the valuation of phenomena and processes can be seen in the media, various branches of the economy, politics, education, religion, science, art, new technologies, etc. Therefore, the question that we seek to answer in our article is the following: what is the role of democratic …
(Nie)Wdzięczność, sztuka i konsumpcja
Artykuł dotyczy jedzenia w kontekście konsumpcjonizmu i jego krytyki. Osnową rozważań jest film Menu. Fabuła filmu posłużyła do stawiania zasadniczych pytań o mechanizmy współczesnej kultury konsumpcji. Autorzy odwołali się do koncepcji społeczeństwa kapitalistycznego Herberta Marcusego, a szczególnie do kategorii represyjnej desublimacji. Restauracje oferujące wykwintne jedzenie (fine dining) stawiają sobie za cel stworzenia możliwości całościow…
Politics of Time
What has really happened in Poland since the election of 2005? After such spectacular events as the practice of lustration and the questioning of solidarity with the European Union, one has to ask: what is the nature of this newly emerging society? As with many of the recent developments in former communist countries that seem to be mysterious and irrational, the situation and ensuing problems are complex and the answers neither trivial nor easy.…

Education for Critical Community and the Pedagogy of Asylum
The current heated debate on the deteriorating status of the university raises a range of pertinent questions, including: What role can the humanities play in culture today in the face of the crisis of higher education? To answer this question, the authors begin by problematizing the relationship between culture, the humanities, and education. In the second part of the paper, they examine the changing role of the humanities in conjunction with th…
Beauty between Repression and Coercion
Love and sex are central notions in all reflection on humanity. And for obvious reasons, too. These notions defy any simple definition because they connote and reference an almost innumerable multitude of things. Moreover, these notions are highly amenable to social factors and have always been enmeshed in plentiful limitations, prohibitions, and precepts. Consequently, when pondering them, thinkers inevitably find themselves speaking from partic…
Ideology and science
This article presents a fragment of the history of psychology in Poland, discussing its development in the years 1945–56, which saw sweeping political and geographical transformations. In that maelstrom of history, psychology was particularly affected by the effects of geopolitical changes, which led to its symbolic ‘arrest’ in 1952, when psychological practice was prohibited and all psychology courses were abolished at universities. Amnesty was …

Wspomnienia z dzieciństwa w widmowym świecie
Childhood Memories in the Spectral WorldThis essay combines autobiographical narrative with an analysis of the possibilities of dialogue with and understanding of another culture.Koczanowicz recounts his childhood in Legnica, Lower Silesia, and his encounter with the different cultures -Russian, Jewish, Ukranian, Lemko and Greek -represented by its inhabitants.Although the Germans who had built the town had been resettled after World War II, thei…
Tożsamość jako niewygoda. Dwie genealogie nowoczesnej hamartii
Koczanowicz explores one of the most interesting effects of modernity, namely the universal sense that we are someone else. This sense is rooted in modernity's key developments, such as the division of labour, social stratification, the collapse of universally accepted values and the appearance of the individual as a separate social category. These developments promote the notion that our identity is imposed from outside. Koczanowicz analyses thi…
Democracy in Dialogue, Dialogue in Democracy
The Polish Case
Within the new topology of conservative regimes emerging from the Great Recession, that of Poland’s Law and Justice government has a distinctive character. Leszek Koczanowicz describes the fracturing of the neoliberal-nationalist formula that had persisted since the 1990s, the second term turned as anti-Western social critique against the first

The Politics of Catastrophe
The catastrophe of the presidential plane crash in April 2010 was of course a far-reaching event in Polish politics, with consequences still very present. The article describes and interprets various ways of speaking about the catastrophe. I consider this rhetoric in the context of a clash of ideologies: that of modernization and of national-religious values. The conservative camp insists on inscribing the crash into Polish history and claims tha…
The Dialogical concept of consciousness in L.S. Vygotsky and G.H. Mead and its relevance for contemporary discussions on consciousness
The Dialogical concept of consciousness in L.S. Vygotsky and G.H. Mead and its relevance for contemporary discussions on consciousness In my paper I show the relevance of cultural-activity theory for solving the puzzles of the concept of consciousness which encounter contemporary philosophy. I reconstruct the main categories of cultural-activity theory as developed by M.M. Bakhtin, L.S. Vygotsky, G.H. Mead, and J. Dewey. For the concept of consci…
Beyond dialogue and antagonism
The aim of the article is to show that the contradiction between dialogue and antagonism can be overcome with the help of the idea of dialogue as developed by the Russian thinker Mikhail Bakhtin. The lack of such theory led to the rejection of liberalism or to the introduction of dialogical principle into the body of liberal politics. It was Jürgen Habermas who first understood the necessity of dialogical consensus as the basis of liberal democra…

Democracy and the Post-Totalitarian Experience
This book presents the work of Polish and American philosophers about Poland’s transition from Communist domination to democracy. Among their topics are nationalism, liberalism, law and justice, academic freedom, religion, fascism, and anti-Semitism. Beyond their insights into the ongoing situation in Poland, these essays have broader implications, inspiring reflection on dealing with needed social changes.
Civil Society as an Ethical Challenge (Paradoxes of the Creation of the Public Sphere in Post-totalitarian Poland)
Article Civil Society as an Ethical Challenge (Paradoxes of the Creation of the Public Sphere in Post-totalitarian Poland) was published on June 1, 2003 in the journal Human Affairs (volume 13, issue 1)
The choice of tradition and the tradition of choice
The paper is aimed at discussing two interpretations of pragmatism in a broader framework of general rules of philosophical interpretation. J. Habermas’ and R. Rorty’s uses of pragmatism are considered in detail and confronted with general assumptions of pragmatic philosophy. It is shown that in both cases the original ideas of pragmatism are changed in order to fit the philosophies of interpreters. The paper ends with discussion of a possibility…
