Bulla Regia II
This paper reports the preliminary results from three seasons of excavations in the Christian cemetery by the Tunisian-British Bulla Regia Archaeological Project. In 2017–2019, excavations in, and around, the Late Antique church in the western cemetery uncovered a complex funerary landscape with a variety of different tomb types, including mosaic caisson tombs, simple masonry tombs, amphora tombs, and earthen graves and multiple funerary mensae .…
Who is this who is coming? From neurosis to neurodegeneration in television adaptations of M. R. James’s ‘Oh, Whistle and I’ll Come to You, My Lad’
This article discusses two BBC television adaptations of M. R. James’s classic ghost story ‘Oh, Whistle and I’ll Come to You, My Lad’ (1904), the first directed by Jonathan Miller (1968) and the second by Andy de Emmony (2010). Arguing that de Emmony’s film takes Miller’s as a point of departure, it attempts to track the progressive ‘psychologization’ of James’s tale, a development that it explores with reference to Sarah Cardwell’s notion of ‘me…

Psychoanalysis
I shall be discussing six books, divided into three pairs. The first pair consists of edited volumes that reprint classic short texts by Freud and gather new essays, by diverse hands, related to them. The second and third pairs consist of monographs, the second pair exploring and developing the methodological principle of free association, and the third examining desire and alterity. The chapter is divided into three sections: 1. Re-Reading Freud…
Psychoanalysis
This year’s review is divided into three sections: 1. Jean Laplanche and the General Theory of Seduction; 2. Psychoanalytic Practice and the Imperative of Mental Health; 3. Psychoanalysis and Aesthetics. The first section deals with newly translated work by and about, Jean Laplanche, a major figure in European psychoanalysis. The second section is concerned with the question of ideology and the state regulation of analytic training, and practice,…

Interrogating the human/animal relation in Freud’s Civilization and its Discontents
This essay tracks the conceptualizations and representations of the human/animal relation in Freud’s late anthropological work Civilization and its Discontents (1930). Rather than seeking to identify a univocal Freudian position on this problematic, I examine the variances and tensions that mark Freud’s thinking with respect to it. Animals and animality, I argue, are not just critical points of reference and illustration in his text but also pote…
Interpreting Russell’s Gray’s Elegy Argument
“On Denoting” is central to the analytic tradition, yet one of its key arguments (the Gray’s Elegy Argument) lacks a canonical reading. Some interpret the passage as rejecting denoting concepts as inconsistent, or the theory that posits them as incoherent. Such readings are too strong, and at odds with the passage. We interpret the argument as a set of considerations that leave the old view as a logically viable (though uneconomical and cumbersom…
