This year’s review is divided into three sections: 1. Jean Laplanche and the General Theory of Seduction; 2. Psychoanalytic Practice and the Imperative of Mental Health; 3. Psychoanalysis and Aesthetics. The first section deals with newly translated work by and about, Jean Laplanche, a major figure in European psychoanalysis. The second section is concerned with the question of ideology and the state regulation of analytic training, and practice, in regard to mental health. Although, as a discrete section, it is focused on a single volume translated from French, the latter parts of the preceding discussion of Laplanche’s work trench upon the same issues. There is, then, a deliberate overlap between these two sections. In the final section, I discuss two volumes that reflect on the relations between psychoanalysis and aesthetics, and that present innovative approaches from within the field of psychoanalysis to the encounter with art and/or literature.
