Towards an Ahmadi ʿaqīda
Does Jamāʿat-i Aḥmadiyya actually have its own creed (ʿaqīda)? If so, what is it? These simple questions implicitly underlie numerous debates about the relationship between Ahmadis and other Muslims. This paper is an attempt at exploring the relationship between ʿaqīda and Muslim identity by looking at the Ahmadi controversy of South Asian Islam. The basis for this analysis is a previously untranslated tract entitled Jamāʿat-i Aḥmadiyya ke ʿAqāʾi…
Theorizing Interreligious Relations
This article is an attempt to think through how interreligious relations might be theorized. It will show how conventional assumptions about interreligious relations can be traced to colonial understandings of the category religion, which determine what we classify as interreligious. I argue that interreligious relations, as we understand it today, developed through the rise of secular nationalism, when religion and politics were purportedly sepa…
Muslims at the Margins of Europe: Finland, Greece, Ireland and Portugal
This volume focuses on Muslims in Finland, Greece, Ireland and Portugal, representing the four corners of the European Union today. It highlights how Muslim experiences can be understood in relation to a country’s particular historical routes, political economies, colonial and post-colonial legacies, as well as other factors, such as church-state relations, the role of secularism(s), and urbanisation. This volume also reveals the incongruous natu…

The Kashmir Crisis as a Political Platform for Jama'at-i Ahmadiyya's Entrance into South Asian Politics
This paper looks at Jama'at-i Ahmadiyya's political involvement in the Kashmir crisis of the 1930s under its second and most influentialkhalīfat al-masīh, Mirza Bashir al-Din Mahmud Ahmad, who took over the movement in 1914, six years after the death of his father, Mirza Ghulam Ahmad. Communal tensions springing from the Kashmir riots of 1931 provided Mirza Mahmud Ahmad with an opportunity to display the ability of his Jama'at to manage an intern…
Transnational Influences on Irish Muslim Networks: From Local to Global Perspectives
The formation of Irish Muslim organizational structures has gradually been taking place for nearly 60 years. External factors, including international politics, have driven this process and shaped its outcomes from the very beginning. This study will demonstrate how the displacement of Irish Muslim organizational structures by purportedly representative transnational umbrella organizations has been influenced by the proponents of global Islamist …
