Does Using Mobile Phones Make You Less Attractive? Phubbing and Perceptions of Warmth, Competence, and Social Attractiveness
Phubbing has become a prominent phenomenon in today’s digital landscape, with detrimental effects on relational well-being. Beyond its negative impact on various types of relationships, scholarly interest has been paid to the influence of phubbing on impression formation. Drawing on the Stereotype Content Model, which highlights the roles of warmth and competence in social perception and evaluation, this study examined how phubbing affects these …
The White gaze: Epistemological imposition and paradoxical logic in educational research
This article critically examines the constraints associated with mainstream ethnographic research, including methodologies, analyses, epistemologies, and logic, herein referred to as the White gaze, a reinforcement of White supremacy. The focus is on how the White gaze infringes upon Black epistemologies and BIPOC epistemologies more broadly. The study highlights the pioneering work of Du Bois' "The Philadelphia Negro" a notable ethnographic stud…

Racist norms until interests converge: A long tradition of egregious educational policy patterns and global implications
This article contextualises the crisis in Black education and the death of a 100-year-old Black educational system resulting from an unintended consequence of Brown: the excavation of thousands of highly educated and skilled Black educators. This theoretical article advances the literature on Brown using two critical race theory (CRT) tenets, the permanence of racism and interest convergence, to discursively trace the regression of Black educatio…
Falling into the gap: The Coloniality of Achievement Gap Discourses and Their Responses
This paper critically analyzes gap discourses in student learning, starting from the achievement gap, education debt, and opportunity gaps, applying the lens of coloniality, racial-capitalism, and modernity (CRCM). Gap discourses are the prevalent rationale behind educational policies and school reforms globally. Specifically in the United States, achievement gap discourses contribute substantially to the educational framework that minoritized st…
Troubling Unintended Harm of Heroic Discourses in Social Justice Leadership
We aim to problematize the ways in which school leaders who seek social justice conflate heroic leadership discourses in their practices. Using qualitative data collected from an urban school principal, this study examines heroic metaphors utilized by the principal when describing social justice leadership and how heroic-centered approaches contradict with achieving social justice goals in school. The findings suggest that the principal’s idea of…
Licensing Effect of Pro-Environmental Behavior in Metaverse
The Metaverse is an important virtual venue in people's daily lives. This study examined whether pro-environmental behaviors in the Metaverse with a self-customized avatar lead to licensing effects, thereby reducing pro-environmental intention in reality. In addition, the study examined the mediating effect of self-presence on the relationship between avatar customization and pro-environmental behavior. A laboratory experiment was conducted using…
The Deep Roots of Inequity: Coloniality, Racial Capitalism, Educational Leadership, and Reform
Purpose: This article is a critical analysis of educational leadership and administration’s historically privileged Eurocentric epistemologies, research methodologies, and intellectual norms, shaping the field through conceptions of coloniality. The purpose of this article is toward decolonizing educational leadership. Problem: Dominant, Eurocentric knowledge systems are epistemically imposing. Racialized and ethnic critiques of Eurocentric epist…
Toward Decolonizing Our Scholarship and Discourses: Lessons From the Special Issue on Decoloniality for EAQ
Members of the Educational Administration Quarterly (EAQ) internal editorial team took a critical look at the publication record of our journal with respect to epistemological plurality over the past 10 years. Our goal was to identify international publication trends and highlight how pluralized the research frames are within EAQ. Data overwhelmingly show that EAQ is a largely U.S.-centric publication, even when the topics explored touch on criti…
Introduction: Coloniality, Educational Leadership, and White Supremacy: The Other Global Pandemic
In lieu of writing a separate introduction to this special issue, the three guest editors invited the EAQ Editor-In-Chief to join them as a coauthor in their introduction. López, agreed but took a few liberties with the draft that was provided to him by the guest editors. The result is an imagined “conversation” that did not actually take place but is highly probable given the deep admiration and mutual respect the four individuals have for each …
Reframing community (dis)engagement: The discursive connection between undemocratic policy enactment, minoritized communities and resistance
While studies have examined leadership efforts to improve community engagement, less is known about how deeply rooted structured discourses, systems, and practices influence leadership actions and responses from communities. Deficit approaches to educational policy reform are pervasive in the most historically marginalized communities and school districts in the United States (US). Drawing on critical policy analysis, this study examines a diseng…
Making Sense of Schooling during Covid-19: Crisis as Opportunity in Korean Schools
This article explores how policy actors in South Korea understand and make meaning of school-related policies responding to COVID-19. Using sensemaking and crisis theory as a framework and informed by literature on policy culture, we analyzed qualitative data collected from interviews with teachers, educational leaders, and parents. The findings show that our participants initially thought the crisis situation would “just pass,” but they experien…
Shared Leadership for Learning in Denver’s Portfolio Management Model

We define this as shared influence on instructional leadership and school-wide decision making, which research suggests have strong ties to student achievement and teacher commitment. Method: We analyze interview data from 53 administrators, teacher leaders, and teachers in eight case stu…
The Color of Neoliberal Reform: A Critical Race Policy Analysis of School District Takeovers in Michigan
This critical case study analyzes Michigan’s implementation of Public Act 4 (PA4), also known as the emergency management (EM) takeover law. PA4 grants the state control of school districts with dire budgetary problems. As most U.S. school districts are citywide, PA4 gives the state direct control over all the (previously locally controlled) schools in Detroit. We use tenets from critical race theory (CRT) and components from critical policy anal…
Mothers' Educational Beliefs and Preschoolers' English Learning Attitudes: The Mediating Role of English Experiences at Home
This article analyzes the relationship between Korean mothers' beliefs about early childhood English education and preschoolers' attitudes toward English learning. English experiences in the home were also projected to be significantly related to the aforementioned factors. Participants consisted of 159 mother-child pairs in South Korea. This study yielded three main results. First, correlations were found between the mothers' education level and…
South Korea’s Annual State Inspection, Double-Edged Sword
The Annual State Inspection by the National Assembly (ASI), which is not observed outside South Korea, is an institution that the National Assembly oversees the executive branch. This study shows how the ASI impacts the performance of the inspected public organizations and their goal ambiguity moderates the performance impact of the ASI. First, the stringent ASI would reduce the effectiveness of the inspected public organization. However, if the …
Examining Latina/o Students’ Experiences of Injustice: LatCrit Insights from a Texas High School
We used Latina/Latino Critical Race Theory (LatCrit) to re-analyze survey and interview data from earlier research in which we found that Latina/o students reported less positive experiences than other students in this high school. We found racial injustice in class enrollments, in students’ experiences with stereotypes and prejudice, in student-teacher relationships, and in school policies and norms. LatCrit principles illustrate interconnection…

Capital punishment and public opinion in thepost-Furmanera: Trends and analyses
An analysis of public opinion polls shows a pronounced trend of increased support for the use of capital punishment since this sanction's ban and subsequent reinstatement in the 1970s. This support is frequently cited in political arenas as justification for the retention of this criminal justice practice despite its rejection by virtually all other culturally and economically similar societies. However, further examination of data from the Gener…

Comment on Whither The First New Nation?
The period between 1963 and the present had been profoundly-troubling to the nation and to the centrist portion of its intellectual class; the “dismal story” of those fifteen years caught them off guard. As Michael Rogin has observed, by the early 1950’s it seemed apparent that FDR, the New Deal, and World War II has stabilized American capitalism; certainly, the war had solidified America’s preeminent position on the world political stage; and t…
