  • Education for democracy: Political participation and practise in schools

Open Access•Ana García Díaz, Jasper Friedrich•ARTICLE•kult-ur revista interdisciplinària…•2025

Ensuring education for citizenship involves incorporating it into schools by providing students with opportunities to participate in democratic processes. This paper uses data from two previous research studies where a secondary data analysis was conducted. The first study presented compared three different schooling types (traditional, democratic and active learning schools), to see how they promoted democratic participation. The second study ga…

  • The prison of the body: School Uniforms Between Discipline and Governmentality

    Open Access•Jasper Friedrich, Rachel Shanks•ARTICLE•Discourse Studies in the Cultural…•2023•Cited by: 4•References: 28

This article asks what uniform practices in schools can tell us about how power functions through a comprehensive analysis of the uniform policies of all Scottish state secondary schools (n = 357). Against the backdrop of large-scale shifts from disciplinary societies to ones dominated by ‘neoliberal governmentality’ identified by Foucault and others, we investigate how these modes of power seem to be entangled in school uniform policies. The ana…

  • Shifting Selves and Spaces: Conceptualising School Emergency Remote Teaching as a Third Space

Open Access•David Johnston, David H Johnston et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Digital Social Research•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 7

The COVID-19 pandemic was the catalyst for unprecedented change within education systems around the world. Teaching and learning which had traditionally taken place in school classrooms suddenly moved online. Teachers’ responses to the emergency changed not just pedagogy but who was teaching as well as when and where teaching took place. Bhabha’s ‘third space’ (1994) provides a way of re-imagining the new spaces (both physical and virtual) which …

  • Employability and school uniform policies: Projecting the employer's gaze

    Open Access•Annabelle Olsson, Jasper Friedrich•ARTICLE•Childhood•2022•References: 43

This article examines employability discourse within school uniform policies as a way to justify uniform. The uniform policy of every publicly funded secondary school in Scotland ( n = 357) was studied using content and discourse analysis. Employability discourse was grouped into three themes: School as preparation for work; school to replicate a work environment; and young people creating a good impression for employers. The rationale of the uni…

  • Making waves: A cross-study analysis of young people's participation arenas in Scotland's schools

    Open Access•B Cro, G Mannion et al.•ARTICLE•Childhood•2022•Cited by: 2•References: 26

This article compares democratic participation research in Scottish schools over a 10-year period. The comparison reveals how 'organic' aspects of decision-making arise in arenas of school activity. We argue that research heretofore has focussed on pupil councils to the exclusion of more everyday embedded and embodied choices. Primary researchers in the studies revisited data, drawing on their respective theoretical frameworks, to consider how ne…

  • Teaching in a third space during national Covid-19 lockdowns: In loco magister

  • New teachers’ responses to Covid-19 in Scotland: Doing surprisingly well

Open Access•Mark Carver, Jasper Friedrich•ARTICLE•Journal of Education for Teaching…•2021

The recent special issue of JET showed narratives of schools shifting to emergency online teaching centred on coping strategies and struggling with online tools. Even where the sense of emergency helped to overcome long-standing resistance to pedagogical change, the emphasis remained on ‘coping’ and the exposing of unmet need for teachers to be able to adapt from traditional classroom pedagogies. The sense of being unprepared was echoed in the se…
