  • Housing the homeless

John D Erickson, Jon Karl Erickson et al.•BOOK•Housing the homeless•2017

"Homelessness has become a lasting issue of vital social concern. As the number of the homeless has grown, the complexity of the issue has become increasingly clear to researchers and private and public service providers. The plight of the homeless raises many ethical, anthropological, political, sociological, and public health questions. The most serious and perplexing of these questions is what steps private, charitable, and public organization…

  • Wilhelm von Humboldt, Edward Sapir, and the constructivist framework

    John D Erickson, Jon Erickson et al.•ARTICLE•Historiographia Linguistica•1997•Cited by: 1•References: 16

Striking similarities between Edward Sapir’s views on language and those of Wilhelm von Humboldt have long been apparent. Because of the avoidance of documentation in his writings, however, it has proved to be impossible to demonstrate the extent of Sapir’s direct familiarity with the works of Humboldt and his commitment to a Humboldtian language philosophy. Rather than pursuing the question of how Sapir might have been influenced by Humboldt, th…

A controversy has been raging in America recently about whether the desecration or destruction of the national flag is protected by free speech as defined by the Constitution. Two cases in particular that caught the public's eye were a flag-burning protest by a young Communist at the Republican National Convention in Dallas and an art work shown in a minority-student show at the Art Institute of Chicago, called What is the Proper Way to Display a…

  • The Fairytale as Art Form and Portrait of Man

    W F H Nicolaisen, Max Luthi et al.•ARTICLE•Western Folklore•1987•Cited by: 11

In this major work by the distinguished Swiss folklorist Max Luthi, the traditional fairytale is examined from two related points of view, that of aesthetics and that of anthropology. Luthi shows that fairytales are more than just a pleasing form; they present a particular way of looking at the world and at human existence. Thus, they must be evaluated in terms of what they say about man and the human condition. This exemplary study will be read …

  • The Language of Presence: Sound Poetry and Artaud

    Jon Erickson•ARTICLE•boundary 2•1985

In this essay I wish to address the impulses that gave rise to sound poetries within various avant-garde movements in the twentieth century, to critique them, and to examine these same impulses in the light of the work of someone not generally seen as a sound poet, but whose work (theoretically at least) and life actually pushed these impulses to their limit-Antonin Artaud. First, I'd like to define some terms I shall be using. I wish to distingu…
