Impacts of Economic Reform in Poland: Incidence and Welfare Changes Within a Consistent Framework
The costs of shortages and rationing are not captured by standard consumer price indices. Thus the change in real GDP per capita is an overestimate of welfare losses in transition economics. In this study virtual prices are used to calculate new cost-of-living indices (CLIs). The results for Polant show that from 1987 to 1992 the CLI ignoring the rationing effects is biased upward from 1.53 to 3.71 percentage points per year. Compared to the esti…

Impacts and Incidence of Agricultural Commodity Programs
This paper analyzes the incidence of agricultural commodity programs. Producers advocate commodity programs and receive price subsidies, but free entry and perfectly elastic supplies of nonland inputs ensure that landowners extract the entire surplus from price subsidies. Moreover, an increase in the target price raises the land rent more than proportionately. Although landless producers benefit from commodity programs in the short run, they do n…

Economic development, contraception and fertility decline in Mexico
In recent years the observed rate of population growth in Mexico has shown evidence of decline from previous high levels. This decline in fertility has been linked to a shift from ‘natural fertility’ to deliberate family size limitation. This article utilises a choice theory based on a three‐equation simultaneous model to analyse determinants of contraception, desired number of children and fertility. Information for the empirical application is …
Bounded Price Variation and Rational Expectations in Endogenous Switching Model of the U.S. Corn Market
A model that includes bounded price variation and rational expectations by producers is estimated for the U.S. corn market. The resulting model specification is highly nonlinear though, since the probability of market equilibrium must be determined endogenously. Unlike previous research, the cross-equation restrictions implied by the rational expectations hypothesis are incorporated in the bounded prices model by using Fair and Taylor's (1983) pr…

Population growth and the adoption of new technology in colonial Taiwanese agriculture
This paper argues that one response to the mortality decline in Taiwan and the consequent rapid population and labour force growth which increased the labour—land ratio was the adoption of a new labour using output‐increasing variety of rice. The differential rates of adoption of the new rice in the seven prefectures of Taiwan and across time are analysed in terms of the lagged natural increase in population, i.e. increased in the labour‐land rat…
An Hedonic Index for Breakfast Cereals
The hedonic index technique is used to estimate the implicit prices for units of breakfast cereal characteristics. Analysis showed that buyers value many attributes; the value placed on each is dependent upon the class of cereal evaluated. Results suggest this technique has potential for assessing buyer's purchasing behavior for nondurable goods
