  • Is Covid-19 a dread risk? The death toll of the pandemic year 2020 in long-term and transnational perspective

Open Access•Bernhard Gill, Theresa Kehler et al.•ARTICLE•Futures•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 43

Dread risks" are threats that can have catastrophic consequences. To analyse this issue we use excess mortality and corresponding life years lost as simple measures of the severity of pandemic events. As such, they are more robust than figures from models and testing procedures that usually inform public responses. We analyse data from OECD countries that are already fully available for the whole of 2020. To assess the severity of the pandemic, w…

Open Access•Johannes Schubert, Stefan Böschen et al.•ARTICLE•European Journal of Sociology•2011•Cited by: 3•References: 16

In contrast to neoliberal rhetoric, the commercialisation of knowledge has proved to be an intricate endeavour that implies unexpected effects. Taking Monsanto's transgenic canola and its propertisation regime as an example, we will shed some light on the counterintuitive phenomenon that strong intellectual property rights are in heavy contrast to the liberal utopia of full commodification,i.e.universal competition and ideal type market relations…

  • Germany

Marion Dreyer, MarionBernhard Dreyer et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Risk Research•2000•Cited by: 1

Germany is the EU member state with the most difficult situation (besides Austria) for marketing genetically modified (GM) crops and food. At the same time, it shows the least administrative effort to respond to the reasons for this situation – public suspicion and protest. Regulators advocate specific precaution-related measures, including marketstage monitoring; these measures, however, do not relate to the primary demands of critics and oppone…
