Internal quality assurance review as an opportunity to further embed ESD in higher education: Successes and challenges
Purpose This study aims to investigate the potential of internal quality assurance reviews to more effectively embed Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) within UK higher education institutions. While many universities have aligned their policies with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), there remains a gap between strategic intent and practical implementation. Design/methodology/approach This study takes the University of Warwick’s 2…
How do Canadian parents evaluate numeracy content in math apps for young children
Well-designed math apps can foster children’s numeracy development. Although parents are interested in using math apps for their children, the quantity and variability in quality of apps can make app selection challenging. As such, it is important to know how parents evaluate numeracy content in math apps for their children. This study investigated parents’ evaluations of four numeracy apps of varying quality. Forty-five parents of 3- to 6-year-o…
Identifying core global mental health professional competencies: A multi-sectoral perspective
Concerned with sustainably alleviating mental distress and promoting the right to health worldwide, global mental health (GMH) is practised across various contexts spanning the humanitarian-development-peace nexus. The inherently intersectoral and multidisciplinary nature of GMH calls for competency frameworks and training programmes that embody diversity, decolonisation and multiprofessionalism. Existing competency frameworks have failed to capt…
Decolonising the imperial city in the works of Igiaba Scego
This article takes Italy and the writings of the Italo-Somali writer Igiaba Scego as a case study for a decolonising approach to travel studies, focusing on Roma negata: percorsi postcoloniali nella città [Rome Denied: Postcolonial Journeys in the City] and La linea del colore: Il grand tour di Lafanu Brown [The Colour Line: The Grand Tour of Lafanu Brown]. Reading these texts through the lens of travel writing helps illuminate the decolonising s…
Burn or Balm: Exploring University Students’ Experiences With Social Media During the Covid-19 Pandemic
The impact on perceived burnout experiences among university students from the intensification of social media use during the earliest phase of the COVID-19 pandemic is not yet fully understood. In total, 516 university students (430 females) in a midsized city in Ontario, Canada completed one online survey that explored student characteristics (i.e., personality, life satisfaction, perceived stress, and basic psychological needs) as well as freq…
Laura Pariani’s Novels of Migration: From Transnational Memory to Cosmopolitan Ethics
This article focuses on two novels by Laura Pariani: Quando Dio ballava il tango (2002) and Il piatto dell’angelo (2013), both of which recount tales of travel and migration between Italy and South America across a broad historical timeframe. These novels represent a challenge to narrow constructions of Italy as a monocultural and monolingual nation, foregrounding cultural and linguistic hybridity and highlighting patterns of belonging that do no…
Examining Parent–Child Spatial Play Interaction Using Traditional Toys and Touch Screen Tablets
SYNOPSISObjective . The context of play has changed dramatically over the past decade with the ubiquitous presence of mobile technologies available to children in and outside the home. Despite increasing use of interactive technological devices at home, the quality of parental interactions in these 2D digital play contexts, relative to traditional 3D play contexts, remains relatively unexplored, especially in the domain of geometry. Design. The p…
Impacts of a Large-Scale Agricultural Training Program in Armenia
Although large-scale agricultural training for farmers in developing countries has been implemented to increase incomes and reduce poverty, little rigorous research has been conducted on whether these programs are effective. We used a clustered randomized controlled trial to estimate the effectiveness of a program funded by the US government that trained more than 50,000 farmers throughout Armenia. Three years after farmers received training, mea…
Syntactic cues to the noun and verb distinction in Mandarin child-directed speech
The syntactic structure of sentences in which a new word appears may provide listeners with cues to that new word’s form class. In English, for example, a noun tends to follow a determiner ( a/ an/ the), while a verb precedes the morphological inflection [ing]. The presence of these markers may assist children in identifying a word’s form class and thus glean some information about its meaning. This study examined whether Mandarin, a language tha…

Political utopia or Potemkin village? Italian travellers to the Soviet Union in the early Cold War
Situated on the border between the capitalist West and Communist East, and with the largest Communist party in Western Europe, Italy found itself at the centre of global ideological struggles in the early Cold War years. A number of Italian writers and intellectuals who had joined the PCI ( Partito Comunista Italiano ) during the Resistance had hoped that the party would play a central role in the post-war reconstruction of Italy and were attract…
Gesturing about number sense
Gestures such as finger counting, pointing, and touching have been found to facilitate mathematical development in preschool and school-aged children. However, little is known about the types of mathematically related gestures used by parent–toddler dyads to facilitate early mathematics learning during the first 3 years of life. A total of 24 children (12 boys and 12 girls) between 18 and 25 months of age and their parents participated in a recor…
Alternative urban journeys: Italian travel writing and the Contromano series
Since 2004 the Contromano series published by Laterza has aimed to present alternative perspectives on contemporary urban Italy, featuring the writing of a number of innovative Italian authors. These writers attempt to uncover hidden aspects of familiar places, often their native town or region. This article situates the series within a body of writing on journeys within Italy and examines how the narratives reflect many of the characteristics an…
Size matters: Early vocabulary as a predictor of language and literacy competence
This paper investigated the predictive ability of expressive vocabulary size and lexical composition at age 2 on later language and literacy skills from ages 3 through 11. Multivariate analysis of covariance was performed to compare 16 language and literacy outcomes between children with large expressive vocabulary size at 24 months ( N = 1,073) and those with smaller expressive vocabulary size. Comparisons between large and small verb size group…

The Writings of Bamboo Hirst: Italy, China and the Performance of Cultural Identity
The writings of Bamboo Hirst weave a public history of Italy's wartime relationship with China into a personal history of travel and migration. They are centrally concerned with the developing identity of their authorial protagonist, revealing the impact of displacement on subjectivity. Blu Cina represents a journey into self-consciousness in which the protagonist comes to an awareness of the ways and processes by which identities are formed and …
Gender, Ethnicity, and Hybrid Forms of Community-Based Urban Activism in Vancouver, 1957–1978: The Strathcona story revisited
In the 1960s and early 1970s, residents of the neighbourhood of Strathcona in the city of Vancouver, Canada, successfully fought the grand designs of planners, engineers, politicians and developers to displace residents, demolish homes, clear lands, and rebuild the area. Against all odds, a relatively politically powerless group of residents and their supporters from diverse ethnic and class backgrounds formed a neighbourhood organization, the St…
