  • Development Strategy and International Capital Flows

Open Access•Julia Y Lin, Justin Yifu Lin et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2025

Although the “Lucas Paradox” has sparked extensive literature on the determinants of international capital flows between developed countries and developing countries, few papers have captured substantial private capital inflows to emerging economies with good economic performance. In this paper, we develop a model where countries differ in their factor endowments and governments' development strategies. If the government in a labour‐abundant coun…

  • Structural change and trade openness in sub‐Saharan African countries

    Open Access•Kabinet Kaba, Julia Y Lin et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2022

In this paper, we study the role of trade openness in the economic reallocation from the agriculture to the manufacturing sector in 34 sub‐Saharan African countries between 1970 and 2016. The results show that the long‐term evolution of trade openness negatively impacts the long‐run and the short‐run dynamics of structural change. Moreover, this impact goes through aggregate exports not aggregate imports. By breaking down global exports, we find …

  • Catch‐up industrial policy and economic transition in China

Open Access•Julia Y Lin, Justin Yifu Lin et al.•ARTICLE•World Economy•2021

This paper studies how catch‐up industrial policies in China affect economic development in a two‐sector neoclassical growth model. To fulfil their aspirations of catching up with the output of the capital‐intensive sector of developed countries, Chinese political leaders adopted industrial policies that subsidise this target sector at the expense of other sectors from 1952 until the economic reform in 1978. The static effect of this industrial p…

  • The Oxford Handbook of Industrial Hubs and Economic Development

Arkebe Oqubay, Justin Yifu Lin•BOOK•Oxford Handbook of Industrial…•2020

Industrialization, supported by industrial hubs, has been widely associated with structural transformation and catch-up in developing, emerging, and advanced economies. There are about 6,000 industrial hubs spread across 147 countries, with a high concentration in emerging and developing economies, particularly in Asia. While the direct economic benefits (such as exports, employment, outputs, and revenues) of industrial hubs are significant, thei…

Industrialization supported by industrial hubs has been widely associated with structural transformation and catch-up. But while the direct economic benefits of industrial hubs are significant, their value lies first and foremost in their contribution as incubators of industrialization, production and technological capability, and innovation. The Oxford Handbook of Industrial Hubs and Economic Development adopts an interdisciplinary approach to e…

  • Chinese Economic and Trade Cooperation Zones in Africa

Tang Xiaoyang, Xiaoyang Tang et al.•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Industrial…•2020

This chapter examines the genesis and development trajectories of Chinese cooperation zones in Africa since 2006, focusing on their impacts on the broad structural transformation of host countries. In spite of the ambitious plans and high expectations, all the China–Africa cooperation zones faced serious delays and challenges in the fields of infrastructure construction, skill transfer, linkage to local enterprises, sector upgrading, policy influ…

This book examines a variety of topics relating to structural transformation, such as why such transformations are associated with persistently high unemployment; the ‘flying-geese’ theory introduced by Japanese economist Kaname Akamatsu in the mid-1930s; mutual, two-way dependence of structural transformation and food security; a competitiveness-based view of structural transformation; the link between world trade and structural change from 1800…

  • The Oxford Handbook of Africa and Economics

Célestin Monga, Justin Yifu Lin•BOOK•Oxford Handbook of Africa and…•2015

A popular myth about the travails of Africa holds that the continent's long history of poor economic performance reflects the inability of its leaders and policymakers to fulfill the long list of preconditions to be met before sustained growth can be achieved. These conditions are said to vary from the necessary quantity and quality of physical and human capital to the appropriate institutions and business environments. While intellectually charm…

A “corpus of knowledge” about the mechanisms of development has been accumulated over decades, and shows an extraordinary variability in its mechanisms in space and time, in the constraints under which they work, and in the policies to be implemented to foster the process of change. This chapter attempts an evaluation of this knowledge by revisiting the great debates of development economics in the light of the theoretical and empirical elements …

  • Measuring Economic Progress in the African Context

Morten Jerven, Célestin Monga et al.•CHAPTER•Oxford Handbook of Africa and…•2014

This chapter examines the debates over the measurement of economic progress in African countries in the twentieth century, paying particular attention to national accounting and the measurement of gross domestic product per capita and economic growth. It considers how African economic progress has been measured from colonial times to the pioneering national account initiatives in the 1950s, economic liberalization and the “discovery” of the infor…

  • New Structural Economics

Julia Y Lin, Justin Yifu Lin•BOOK•New structural economics•2012

The new structural economics argues that the best way to upgrade a country's endowment structure is to develop its industries at any specific time according to the comparative advantages determined by its given endowment structure at that time. The economy will be most competitive, the economic surplus will be the largest, and the capital accumulation and the upgrading of factor endowment structure will be the fastest possible. The 'New Structura…

    Julia Y Lin, Justin Yifu Lin•ARTICLE•Journal of Political Economy•1990•Cited by: 57•References: 4

The agricultural crisis in China in 1959-61, after the initial success of the collectivization movement, resulted in 30 million extra deaths. In this paper, a game theory hypothesis proposes the main cause of this catastrophe. I argue that, because of the difficulty in supervising agricultural work, the success of an agricultural collective depends on a self-enforcing contract, however, can be sustained only in a repeated game. In the fall of 195…

    Open Access•Julia Y Lin, Justin Yifu Lin et al.•ARTICLE•The Economic Journal•2000•Cited by: 46•References: 2

Food availability decline and Sen's entitlement are two leading approaches in understanding causes of famine. Previous research based on case studies has given independent support to each approach. This paper analyses the Chinese famine of 1959–61 by considering jointly the urban bias and the decline in food availability as causes. We find that both factors contributed significantly to the increase in death rates during this famine. To our knowle…

Aroused by the unexpected magnitude of excess deaths estimated by Western demographers, recently there has been a revival of interest in the causes of the Great Chinese famine of 1958-61. Depending on the underlying assumptions and methodologies employed, the excess deaths of this famine are estimated to range from a minimum of 16.5 million to as many as 30 million. With a population of roughly 660 million in 1958, the year marking the origin of …

  • Prohibition of factor market exchanges and technological choice in Chinese agriculture

Julia Y Lin, Justin Yifu Lin•ARTICLE•The Journal of Development Studies•1991

This article constructs a model of technological choice in an economy where market exchanges in land and labour are prohibited. Empirical data on demand for tractors, tractor usage and chemical fertilisers in China are employed to test several hypotheses derived from the theoretical model. The theory implies that the impact of relative factor scarcity on the pattern of technological choice in such an economy is similar to that in a market economy…

Open Access•Ross Garnaut, Shu-tʿien Kuo et al.•BOOK•Third Revolution in the Chinese…•1996

The first revolution in the Chinese countryside was the land reform after the proclamation of the People's Republic of China in 1949. The second was decollectivization of agriculture and shift to the household responsibility system as a basis for agricultural production. This set the scene for the freeing of markets for farm products and linking of domestic markets to international markets; this 1996 book explores this third revolution. The first…
