Why Land Titling is Always Hard: Land Reallocation and Path Dependence
Securing property rights is critical for developing countries, yet the progress of many land titling reforms has been far from smooth. This study centres on China’s land titling program, seeking to elucidate why these reforms often encounter unexpected hurdles and providing empirical evidence addressing the role of path dependence in land rights insecurity. Utilising nationally representative household-level survey data, our research reveals that…

The Role of Women's Intra‐Household Decision‐Making in Enhancing Crop Diversity and Dietary Diversity to Achieve SGD Synergies: Evidence From the Vulnerable Areas of Asia
Women in Asia countries are often characterized by high participation but limited decision‐making in agricultural activities, despite their critical role in achieving the synergistic benefits of Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs), particularly SDG 2 (Zero Hunger), SDG 5 (Gender Equality), and SDG 15 (Life on Land). This study examines the association between women's intra‐household decision‐making regarding crop choice and household dietary div…
Does the closure of polluting enterprises improve rural livelihoods? Evidence from rural China
In response to an increasingly dire pollution scenario, the Chinese government initiated the largest and most extensive environmental inspection campaign in history starting in 2016. Numerous polluting enterprises were closed due to environmental concerns in the rural areas. Drawing on two‐period panel data from the China Rural Development Survey, this study revealed the inherent mechanism of the polluting enterprises closure on local rural livel…

Heterogeneous Effects of Skill Training on Rural Livelihoods around Four Biosphere Reserves in China
The growing contradiction between protection and livelihood is a common challenge for most protected areas in developing countries. Skill training is an important way to increase household income and alleviate the dilemma between conservation and development. However, its effects on household income around protected areas have rarely been explored. This paper aims to evaluate the effect of skill training on the income of households around four Bi…

More than just a mental stressor: Psychological value of social distancing in Covid-19 mitigation through increased risk perception—a preliminary study in China
Social distancing is an effective measure to prevent epidemic infections during a pandemic outbreak, but its psychological value in COVID-19 pandemic mitigation remained less detected. Our study fills this gap by conducting a nationwide survey in China between 12 and 25 February (2020), and a follow-up survey targeting the same participants between 25 and 28 March (2020). We have discovered that perceived increased time staying at home, a subject…
Anthropomorphic Strategies Promote Wildlife Conservation through Empathy: The Moderation Role of the Public Epidemic Situation
The global illegal wildlife trade directly threatens biodiversity and leads to disease outbreaks and epidemics. In order to avoid the loss of endangered species and ensure public health security, it is necessary to intervene in illegal wildlife trade and promote public awareness of the need for wildlife conservation. Anthropomorphism is a basic and common psychological process in humans that plays a crucial role in determining how a person intera…

Effects of protected areas on welfare of local households: The case of Maasai Mara National Reserve in Kenya
Protected areas are vital for biodiversity conservation although some have been criticized for not providing adequate socio‐economic benefits to local people. Yet, empirical studies on socio‐economic impacts of protected areas that control for confounding factors are rare. Here, we assessed the potential impacts of Maasai Mara National Reserve in south‐western Kenya on welfare (indicated by levels of income, consumption and assets) of, and povert…
The Impact of Social Support on the Health of the Rural Elderly in China
With the dramatic trend of global aging, the physical and mental health of the rural elderly has attracted significant attention. Social support plays an important role in improving the health of the elderly. However, assessing the impact of social support on the physical and mental health of the elderly is challenging in rural China. This paper analyzes the impact of social support on the physical and mental health of the Chinese rural elderly b…
Conditional cash transfers, uptake of maternal and child health services, and health outcomes in western rural China
The CCT program generated modest improvements in the uptake of MCH services and mothers' knowledge of MCH services in poor rural areas of Western China. These improvements, however, did not translate into substantial improvements in child health outcomes for two potential reasons: poor CCT implementation and the low quality of rural health facilities

Son Preference, Eldest Son Preference, and Educational Attainment: Evidence From Chinese Families
Gender inequality has long been an important topic of concern. This article empirically measures whether there exists son preference and eldest son preference in China, from the perspective of an individual's educational attainment, by using the data set of China Family Panel Studies in 2010. We find that (a) sons receive more education than daughters, and that the gender education gap for rural residents is greater than that of residents from ur…
Poverty and Subjective Poverty in Rural China
China is undergoing a campaign which is called 'The Targeted Poverty Alleviation Policy' to eradicate extreme poverty from rural China until 2020. Though poverty in rural China has been studied intensively in different objective dimensions, little attention has been paid to poverty line settings and subjective poverty, which are hinged to the policy effects. In order to fill in the research gap, this study employs a nationally representative surv…
Patterns of human-wildlife conflict and management implications in Kenya: A national perspective
With the intention to augment better management of human-wildlife conflicts (HWC) in Kenya, we assessed a national HWC pattern using a decade-long (2005–2016) monitoring data series. The results demonstrate that out of 29,647 reported HWC cases, crop raiding was the most frequent type (73%) followed by livestock depredation (23%) and infrastructure damage (4%). Different crops, livestock and wildlife species involved in the conflicts were also id…

Effect of Parental Migration on the Academic Performance of Left Behind Children in North Western China
China’s rapid urbanisation has induced large numbers of rural residents to migrate from their homes in the countryside to urban areas in search of higher wages. As a consequence, it is estimated that more than 60 million children in rural China are left behind and live with relatives, typically their paternal grandparents. These children are called Left Behind Children (LBCs). There are concerns about the potential negative effects of parental mi…
The More Educated, the Healthier: Evidence from Rural China
Education, as an important aspect of human capital, not only affects the economic returns of an individual, but also affects non-economic returns. This paper uses data from the China Family Panel Studies (CFPS) in 2014 and explores the impact of education on the health status of rural residents by using the family fixed-effect model. We find that education can improve the self-reported health status and reduce the possibility of depression of rur…

The Education Gap of China’s Migrant Children and Rural Counterparts
Rural residents in China today face at least two key decisions: a) where to live and work; and b) where to send their children to school. In this paper we study the second decision: should a rural parent send their child to a public rural school or have him or her attend a private migrant school in the city. While there is an existing literature on the impact of this decision on student academic performance, one of the main shortcomings of curren…

Giving kids a head start: The impact and mechanisms of early commitment of financial aid on poor students in rural China
We estimate the impact of two early commitment of financial aid (ECFA) programs—one at the start and one near the end of junior high school (seventh and ninth grades, respectively)—on the outcomes of poor, rural junior high students in China. Our results demonstrate that neither of the ECFA programs has a substantive effect. We find that the ninth-grade program had at most only a small (and likely negligible) effect on matriculation to high schoo…

Exploring the dropout rates and causes of dropout in upper-secondary technical and vocational education and training (TVET) schools in China
Policymakers in many developing countries regard upper-secondary technical and vocational education and training (TVET) as a key element in economic growth and poverty reduction. Unfortunately, there is evidence that upper-secondary TVET programs in developing countries experience high rates of dropout. The overall goal of this study is to examine the dropout rates and reasons for dropout among upper-secondary TVET students in China. To meet this…
Nutrition and Educational Performance in Rural China's Elementary Schools: Results of a Randomized Control Trial in Shaanxi Province
Despite growing wealth and a strengthening commitment from the government to provide quality education, a significant share of students across rural China still have inadequate access to micronutrient-rich regular diets. Such poor diets can lead to nutritional problems, such as iron-deficiency anemia, that can adversely affect attention and learning in school. The overall goal of this article is to test whether simple nutritional interventions lo…

The Feminisation of Agriculture with Chinese Characteristics
The objectives of this article are to assess whether or not the feminisation of agriculture is occurring in China, and if so, to measure its impact on productivity. To meet these objectives, we rely on three data sets that allow us to explore who works on China's farms and the effects of the labour allocation decisions of rural households on productivity. We find that since the late 1990s, the role of women has increased in both the supply of far…
School Dropouts and Conditional Cash Transfers: Evidence from a Randomised Controlled Trial in Rural China's Junior High Schools

China’s Left-Behind Children: Impact Of Parental Migration On Health, Nutrition, And Educational Outcomes
China's rapid development and urbanization have induced large numbers of rural residents to migrate from their homes to urban areas in search of better job opportunities. Parents typically leave their children behind with a caregiver, creating a new, potentially vulnerable subpopulation of left-behind children in rural areas. A growing number of policies and nongovernmental organization efforts target these children. The primary objective of this…
