  • The Assimilation of Immigrants in the U.S. Labor Market: Employment and Labor Force Turnover

    Michael E Hurst•BOOK•Assimilation of Immigrants in the…•2018

This book analyzes the labor market adjustment processes of immigrants in the United States. Newly-arrived immigrants earn less, work fewer weeks, and have higher rates of unemployment than native-born workers. After a period of assimilation, these conditions later converge to, and often surpass, those of native-born workers. The adjustment process traditionally implies greater employment turnover.Newly-arrived immigrant men have lower employment…

    Michael E Hurst, M E ELIOT HURST•ARTICLE•Annals of the Association of…•1970•References: 2

The structure of land use in an urban area imposes certain movement relationships. A study of nonresidential land uses was conducted in Perth, Scotland, in an attempt to analyze some of the land use-traffic generation relationships. The results of the analysis indicate that there is a functional relationship between land use and the volume of urban travel, and that it appears that location and the intensity of use of the land are also important v…

  • The Structure of Movement and Household Travel Behaviour

    Open Access•Michael E Hurst, M E ELIOT HURST•ARTICLE•Urban Studies•1969•Cited by: 3•References: 9

Transportation studies to date have tended to take a macroscopic view of movement patterns. The tripmakers responses to the transport system are frozen as habit patterns. To fully understand these patterns however and to increase the possibility of predicting behaviour, a more detailed study of travel motivation is suggested. Some exploratory conceptualisations, including that of 'movement space' are explored. Travel motivation is broken down int…
