  • The Impacts of U.S.—China Trade War on Entrepreneurship in China

Open Access•Xinyu Zhang, Dongmin Kong•ARTICLE•Asia & the Pacific Policy Studies•2026

The entrepreneurial consequences of the U.S.—China trade war remain difficult to identify because the escalation of tariffs closely overlapped with the COVID‐19 pandemic, another major shock that simultaneously affected firm entry and economic activity. Distinguishing the independent effect of the trade war is therefore essential for understanding how geopolitical conflicts influence entrepreneurship in emerging economies. Using panel data for 28…

  • Local Government Fiscal Stress and Earnings Management: Evidence from China

Dongmin Kong, Susan Sunila Sharma et al.•ARTICLE•European Accounting Review•2025

This study examines whether and how fiscal stress in China’s local governments shapes firms’ earnings management. We employ a difference-in-differences approach that utilizes the 2005 abolition of agricultural taxes as an exogenous shock. In the wake of abolition, firms in fiscally stressed counties exhibit a higher propensity for downward earnings management than do their counterparts. In delving into the reasons for this propensity, we identify…

  • Effects of anti-corruption campaigns on cesarean section rate: Evidence from China

Open Access•Jessica Ya Sun, Jingwei Huang et al.•ARTICLE•Humanities and Social Sciences…•2024

The excessive utilization of cesarean section (CS) has become a global concern, given the potential short-term and long-term detrimental effects for mothers and infants. Worldwide, the rate of CS continues to rise, but efforts to curtail unnecessary CS procedures have yielded limited success. By combining data from three resources, this study aims to estimate the effects of anti-corruption campaigns under the Xi administration on CS rates. We foc…

  • The contraction of Chinese shadow banking and corporate investment behavior: Evidence from the background of the “New Rules on asset management

Open Access•Zhibin Ji, Naide Ye et al.•ARTICLE•China Economic Quarterly…•2024•References: 12

Employing the exogenous scenario of the “New Rules on Asset Management” in April 2018, this paper tries to explore the impact of the contraction of Chinese shadow banking on corporate investment behavior. This paper finds that the regulation leads to a 18.3% decrease in capital expenditure for firms relying on shadow banking system prior to the shock. Then, this paper tests three underlying mechanisms, which include the decrease of corporate borr…

  • Seeking the Shelter of Governments: The Unintended Consequence of Environmental Regulation on Firm Ownership Dynamics

Ni Qin, Dongmin Kong•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2024•References: 57

We examine the causal effect of environmental regulation on firm ownership dynamics. China’s central government took the reduction of sulfur dioxide (SO2) emissions as the main performance evaluation criterion for local government leaders in 2005. Based on a difference-in-differences framework, our results show that environmental regulation increases firms’ state shareholdings, and these findings are robust to various endogeneity and sensitivity …

  • Covid-19 lockdown and municipal solid waste: Evidence from the discarding records of 252 communities in China

Open Access•Dongmin Kong, Chenhao Liu et al.•ARTICLE•Environment and Development…•2023

This study investigates the impacts of the COVID-19 lockdown on municipal solid waste (MSW). Based on a unique data set of daily discarding records of 252 communities in Beijing, China, we conduct a difference-in-differences estimation and find that the total daily MSW decreased by 134.16 kg in a community, which is equivalent to at least 0.22 kg per household per day, and the average weight of MSW per package decreased by 56.8 per cent after the…

Ni Qin, Dongmin Kong•ARTICLE•Economic Development and Cultural…•2022•Cited by: 1•References: 45

This study investigates the impact of improved access to credit on entrepreneurship. We exploit a quasi-natural experiment—namely, the Postal Savings Bank of China gaining official approval in 2006 to launch its own loan business—to establish causality. Findings reveal that improved access to credit has sizeable positive effects on entrepreneurship, especially in capital-intensive industries and areas with high levels of government institutional …
