Do Asymmetric Networks Help or Hinder Small Firms' Ability to Export
ECHEVERRI-CARROLL E., H UNNICUTT L., and HANSEN N. (1998) Do asymmetric networks help or hinder small firms' ability to export?, Reg. Studies 32, 721-733. Studies of industrial districts in Europe and the US and of networked firms in Japan recognize the positive correlation between symmetric networks - those between firms of similar size - and their success in international markets. This relationship is not obvious in the case of asymmetric netwo…

Immigrant and Native Ethnic Enterprises in Mexican American Neighborhoods: Differing Perceptions of Mexican Immigrant Workers
This study uses original data from a large sample of businesses located in Mexican ethnic neighborhoods (barrios) in Texas and California to analyze how perceptions of the economic roles of Mexican immigrant workers differ among three employer groups: native ethnic, immigrant ethnic and non-ethnic. It was found that the immigrant ethnic employer group depends more on Mexican immigrants as workers and as consumers than does the native ethnic group…
The nature and significance of transborder cooperation in the Mexico‐U.S. borderlands: Some empirical evidence
Mexico-United States border region is a meeting place, a transition zone between two great civilizations. Numerous studies have highlighted the many interdependencies that exist between the Mexican and U.S. borderlands. Some critics have emphasized the threat that inexpensive Mexican labor represents to workers on the U.S. side. Others, emphasizing the economic disparities between the Mexican and U.S. sides, have argued that asymmetric interdepen…
Conflict resolution and the evolution of cooperation in the U.S.‐Mexico borderlands
Some recent observations by Jorge Bustamante (1985b) provide the point of departure for this paper. He maintains that recent relations between the United States and Mexico have been characterized by tensions whose level has not been seen since the nationalization of U.S. oil interests in Mexico in 1938. Although empirical evidence indicates clearly that bilateral relations have increased in intensity and diversity, the representations of politici…
Regional Transboundary Cooperation Efforts in Centralist States: Conflicts and Responses in France and Mexico
France and Mexico have long traditions of highly centralized government. Nevertheless,in each case, populations in border regions, which are distant from the national capital, have close informal cultural and economic ties with neighboring populations in adjacent nations. In France, tensions between central authorities and local and regional authorities over greater international cooperation at the local and regional levels have been especially e…

The Protestant Ethic as a General Precondition for Economic Development
Problems of economic development have inevitably stimulated interest in human motivation as it pertains to economic action. In this regard, frequent allusion has been made to Max Weber's The Protestant Ethic and the Spirit of Capitalism . This paper argues that understanding of Weber's thesis concerning both the Protestant ethic and capitalism has been frequently erroneous or incomplete, and that when his thought concerning the metaphysical found…

The Structure and Determinants of Local Public Investment Expenditures
DISCUSSIONS of municipal financial difficulties nearly always involve fundamental problems of local public investment requirements. It is curious, therefore, that studies of the determinants of such outlays have been so scant. One probable reason in the United States is that the relative financial responsibility for local investment of municipal, county, state, and federal governments may vary considerably from region to region and even among com…
Central-Local Cooperative Financing for Local Public Investment: "Can the Belgian Experience Be "Borrowed
C HARLES TIEBOUT has written that the expense of being over-dramatic, this writer suggests that just as the depression of the thirties strained public faith in market forces, the failure to solve urban problems in the sixties may again tax public faith in market forces. 1 The urban problems which are of most concern to planners, economists, and government decision-makers generally are related to local public capital formation and its finance. In …
