  • Reassessing organizational structure as a painting of space

    Ian King, Ian W King•ARTICLE•Culture and Organization•2003

This paper seeks to compare and consider the understanding of placing two – what might appear – similar images side by side. At one level by comparing an image from Organization Theory with another from Modern Art may sound ridiculous and yet at another our comparative analysis may reveal and suggest much about how we as students of management and orgsanizations understand the concept of use of space. Our examination draws on a range of sources f…

  • Auctions Beat Posted Prices in a Small Market

Benoit Julien, Benoı̂t Julien et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Institutional and…•2002

In a model with two buyers and sellers we consider the choice of sales mechanism from three possibilities: posted prices, and auctions with and without reserve prices. • Kurt Tucholsky as Prophet of European Unity

    Open Access•Ian King•ARTICLE•German Life and Letters•2001

Whilst Kurt Tucholsky has long been recognised as the leading left‐wing intellectual, polemicist and satirist of the Weimar Republic, his enthusiasm for the cause of a united Europe has only recently come to light. In the late 1920s he wrote frequently of the need to abandon absolute state sovereignty in favour of a Federal United States of Europe, and even anticipated Mikhail Gorbachev’s concept of a common European house. His reasoning was to b…

  • Commitment, Efficiency and Footloose Firms

    Ian King, Linda Welling•ARTICLE•Economica•1992

The authors consider dynamic competition between a small number of local governments to attract a single large plant. The surplus available in each location is unknown when the initial location decision is made. Two cases are considered: if all agents can commit to second period actions and if they cannot. Without commitment, initially the firm will discriminate against the region with the lower set-up costs. If first-period productivity is low, …
