Voting without ideology. Evidence from Spain (1979-2008)
Although non-ideological voters make up a considerable share of the electorate, the literature has systematically overlooked their voting behaviour. Using Spanish electoral data from the 1979-2008 electoral period, we seek to identify the alternative cues ?in the absence of ideology? these voters may use when casting their ballot. We do not find that evaluations of the incumbent?s performance have a greater influence on non-ideological voters, as…
Determinants of the Level of Informality of Informal Micro-Enterprises
Recognizing that enterprises operate at varying levels of informality, this paper evaluates the determinants of their degree of informality. Reporting a 2012 survey of 300 informal microenterprises in the city of Lahore in Pakistan, the finding is that the key predictors of their level of informality are the characteristics of the entrepreneur and enterprise, rather than their motives or the wider formal and informal institutional compliance envi…
Evaluating the Cash-in-Hand Consumer Culture in the European Union
To evaluate critically the assumption that consumers participating in cash-in-hand transactions are rational economic actors simply seeking a lower price, evidence from 26,659 interviews conducted in 27 European Union member states in 2007 is reported. This reveals that a lower price is the sole reason for just 44% of all informal economy purchases, one of several reasons for 28% of such purchases and not a reason in 28% of cases. A multinomial l…

Political Representation in Spain
Political representation has been widely studied from a theoretical perspective, but empirical research has been more scarce, mainly due to the lack of suitable data. This article attempts to contribute to this flourishing field with an analysis of the results of a survey that was administered in 1997 both to Spanish MPs and to citizens, which inquired about different aspects of political representation. We concentrate on analysing the way the ro…
