International student mobilities in a contagion: (Im)mobilising higher education
This article reflects on the possible effects of the COVID-19 pandemic on international student mobilities and higher education systems. Celebrated as a 'success' story of a mutually beneficial globalisation, international higher education as we have known it is unravelling and reassembling. We offer an overview of the material changes and public discourses that are reframing student mobilities and higher education from three Anglophone positions…
Temporally Distributed Aspirations: New Chinese Migrants to New Zealand and the Figuring of Migration Futures
This article contributes to the literature on migration aspirations by examining their temporal dimensions and capacity to shape and be reshaped through migration. Drawing on qualitative research with Chinese migrants in New Zealand, we unpack the shifting character of aspirations to migrate in relation to three dimensions: everyday times; individual lifetimes; and institutional times. Utilising this temporally sensitive theoretical approach, the…
Fair Borders? Migration Policy in the Twenty-First Century
In recent years, discontent with migration and migrants in the wealthy global north has manifested in disturbing ways: cue Brexit, xenophobia, border paranoia, far-right nationalism and its bedfellow white supremacy. On the surface, Aotearoa New Zealand appears to have escaped the uglier aspects of this nativism. Despite the grumblings of the New Zealand First Party, no serious popular or political anti-immigration movement has appeared, and raci…
Digital belongings: The intersections of social cohesion, connectivity and digital media
The rapid proliferation and ongoing transformation of digital technologies and social media platforms have had a substantial influence on the participatory cultures of young people and their associated social connections. This social/digital nexus raises important questions of social cohesion, with digital technologies at once augmenting social interaction whilst simultaneously creating an uneven landscape of access for participation. To address …
Governmental assemblages of internationalising universities: Mediating circulation and containment in East Asia
This paper critically appraises the internationalization practices currently embraced by some of East Asia's leading universities. We examine the 'governmental assemblage' that constitutes the 'international university' with a particular focus on the ways in which this transformation has involved an increased circulation of international students. Mobile students are caught up in the desires of universities and national governments to craft 'worl…
Globalising higher education in and through urban spaces: Higher education projects, international student mobilities and trans‐local connections in S eoul
This paper explores the connections between universities and cities in a moment of heightened emphasis on international student mobilities and globalising processes in Asian higher education. In particular, I seek to draw attention to the contingent assembly of the urban and its role in globalising higher education by highlighting the ways in which urban spaces draw together different sorts of trans‐local connections and flows. To explore this ap…
Forum on Race and Genomics
Human Genome Research Institute, warned his colleagues in 2003. At BioSocieties, we have been committed to bringing the perspectives of the social sciences to bear on the charged issues at hand. In September 2006 (Vol. 1, Part 3), we published our first forum on race and genomics, where we focused on larger questions raised by the decision of Nature Genetics to publish a special openaccess supplement-Genetics for the Human Race-in November 2004, …
Initial sequencing and analysis of the human genome
The human genome holds an extraordinary trove of information about human development, physiology, medicine and evolution. Here we report the results of an international collaboration to produce and make freely available a draft sequence of the human genome. We also present an initial analysis of the data, describing some of the insights that can be gleaned from the sequence.
