  • Farming

    Open Access•Richard Willis•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Viewpoint•2001

The continuation of the deregulated and restructured environment of the 1980s has produced differential impacts across different farming types and therefore varying results in different rural regions. There has been a major land use change away from traditional sheep farming to dairying on the flats and forestry on the steeper hills. Net farm profit during the 1990s has increased by 180 per cent on dairy farms but by only 97 per cent on sheep and…

  • Manufacturing

    Open Access•Richard Willis•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Viewpoint•2001

While not as bad as the loss of 80,000 manufacturing jobs in the 1980s, the loss of a further 30,000 jobs in the 1990s showed that the process of restructuring did not stop in 1990. The picture that emerges is more varied than the destruction of the earlier decade. There is certainly evidence of a lean, mean, more export‐orientated group of firms that are competing internationally under the new low protection regime. On the other hand, it is clea…

In the autumn of 1936, a prehistoric grave was discovered near the village of Janislawice, Skierniewice Voievodom, central Poland, by two local farmers whilst digging for gravel. The grave was located on the north bank of the Lupia River (a tributary of the Bzura River), 13m above the river valley and 159 m above OD. It was dug into gravelly-sandy fluvioglacial deposits of the penultimate glaciation, on the slope of a kame hill (fig. 1). Although…

    Open Access•Richard Willis•ARTICLE•Archaeologia•1787

Mr. Willis, in endeavouring to ascertain the place where some battles were fought between Edmund Ironside and Canute, which are mentioned by our old historians in such a manner as to have left the spot doubtful to Mr. Camden and others, observes, that Dr. Stukeley, in his letter to lord Pembroke, speaking of Figbury-ring , near Salisbury, says, “To the east is Clarendon , which your lordship first observed “from old writings ought to be called Cl…

  • X. An Essay towards a Discovery of the great Ikineld-Street of the Romans

    Open Access•Richard Willis•ARTICLE•Archaeologia•1787

Whatever ground there may be for supposing the city of Winchester to have been built near 1000 years before Christ, there seems to be no doubt of its having been a Roman station, and probably one of their cities; a pavement of brick, and coins of Constantine the Great, and others, were discovered in digging the foundations of the palace, which was begun by Charies II. It is said to have had formerly six gates, four principal of which still subsis…

    Open Access•Richard H Willis, Richard Willis•ARTICLE•Archaeologia•1787

The Roman Causeway which runs from the N. E. to the S. W. of the kingdom through Hants and Wilts, is known through those counties by the name of the Portway . If I may be allowed to give this name to those ways in Antoninus's Itinera which run in a North Easterly direction from this road in Hants, and South Westerly from its Wiltshire limit, the Portway is as long as either of the two great ways in longitudinem ; and if it is a Roman way from the…

I Beg the gentlemen of the Society, and Dr. Stukeley in particular, would observe the Diverticulum Mr. Taylor has shown in his map, or accurate survey of Hampshire, of the Ikeneld street, running from the north-east corner of Sir Philip Meadows' park, which Mr. Taylor calls Chute park to a little house to the S. W. called Scots-Poor. This Diverticulum is called Chute-causeway. Then note what the Dr. says of Chute-causeway, (Itin. Curios. pag. 175…
