    Open Access•Hui Meng•ARTICLE•TranscUlturAl A Journal of…•2021•References: 2

This article studies Eileen Chang’s (1920-1995)’s self-translation as a cultural mediation between two worlds. Different from the previous studies which either focus mainly on a single work or interpret from the perspective of Sinophone studies, this article presents a relatively inclusive view of Chang’s self-translation by contrasting her practices in the 1940s with that of the post-1950s, examining the changing Skopos that dictates how she con…

  • Cultural hybridity and bilingual creativity: Ha Jin’s self-translation in A Good Fall

Hui Meng, Hong Cai•ARTICLE•Asia Pacific Translation and…•2020

Growing out of a particular cultural and historical milieu of bilingualism, cultural hybridity, and transnationalism, Ha Jin’s self-translated work A Good Fall (落地) employs “nativized” discourse norms and strategies to convey the particularities of two language systems. Despite numerous studies about his English works, limited attention has been paid to his self-translation. This article studies how Skopos dominates his employment of translation …

    Open Access•Yan Wang, Yihan She et al.•ARTICLE•Aggressive Behavior•2018•Cited by: 1•References: 42

Acts of self-control are more likely to fail after previous exertion of self-control, known as the ego depletion effect. Research has shown that depleted participants behave more aggressively than non-depleted participants, especially after being provoked. Although exposure to nature (e.g., a walk in the park) has been predicted to replenish resources common to executive functioning and self-control, the extent to which exposure to nature may cou…

  • Democratising western research using non-western theories: Rancière and mute Chinese theoretical tools

Because of the growing presence of research students from China in western research education programs, their research might also make an original contribution to knowledge by engaging Chinese languages and theories. While drawing on Rancière's novel conceptualisations of mute speech and democracy, this article is directed at interrupting the tradition of importing French ideas into anglophone educational research, and instead feeds them into cre…

The authors report a series of efforts to validate a U.S. adult social self-efficacy inventory, the Perceived Social Self-Efficacy scale (PSSE), in Chinese populations. They argue that the construct underlying the PSSE scale constitutes an important component of Chinese adult social self-efficacy, which was confirmed in focus group discussions. The original English PSSE items were back translated into Chinese and were adapted to suit Chinese lang…
