    Open Access•Chao-qiang Wang, Chao‐qiang Wang et al.•ARTICLE•Environment Development and…•2025

  • DHH and L2 college students’ knowledge of English resultatives and depictives

Open Access•Ronald R Kelly, Gerald P Berent et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2025

College-level deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students and hearing students of English as a Second Language (L2) along with hearing native speakers (NS) of English were assessed in their knowledge of English resultative and depictive sentences. In “Kevin wiped the table clean,” the resultative phrase “clean” indicates that the table became clean as a result of Kevin wiping it. In “Megan drove the car drunk,” the depictive phrase “drunk” describes …

  • Academic verb knowledge of DHH college students and their hearing peers

Open Access•Gerald P Berent, Ronald R Kelly et al.•ARTICLE•The Journal of Deaf Studies and…•2024

This study addressed the critical gap in research on the academic English vocabulary knowledge of deaf and hard-of-hearing (DHH) students at the college level, with a specific focus on academic English verbs. An English vocabulary test was developed to assess knowledge of academic verbs at three distinct corpus-defined lexical frequency ranges. The test was administered to the DHH students along with two comparison groups of college peers—student…

  • Serum metabolic signatures of schizophrenia patients complicated with hepatitis B virus infection

Open Access•Caigui Lin, Qing Hu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

Distinguishable metabolic profiles were found in the four groups. In comparison with HC, HBV infection induced increased levels of citrate and succinate to perturbate the tricarboxylic acid cycle and succinate-related pathways. Similar to SZ cases, SZ + HBV patients exhibited decreased glucose but increased citrate, pyruvate, and lactate, suggesting the occurrence of disturbance in glucose metabolism. Moreover, in comparison with HC, several seru…

Open Access•Xiaoyu Ma, Fan Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

Background: Enterococcus faecalis has been commonly considered as one of the major pathogens of the urinary tract infection (UTI) in human host worldwide, whereas the molecular characteristics of E. faecalis clinical isolates from the patients with UTI in China remains seldomly reported. This study aimed to investigate the resistance mechanism, molecular characteristics and risk factors of E. faecalis clinical isolates from patients with UTI in C…

  • Insufficient Lycopene Intake Is Associated With High Risk of Prostate Cancer

Open Access•You Lyu, You Lu et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Public Health•2021

Although lycopene intake and risk of prostate cancer have been explored for decades, recent studies show that Non-Hispanic Black Prostate Cancer (PCa) patients benefit less than Non-Hispanic White patients from a lycopene intake intervention program. This study examined whether a lycopene intake-related racial disparity exists in reducing the risk of PCa in healthy adults. Data on healthy, cancer-free Non-Hispanic Black (NHB) men ( n = 159) and N…

  • Chuang Tzu’s selflessness

Zhong Chen, Tingting Yao•ARTICLE•Chinese Semiotic Studies•2021

The cognitive paradigm of symbols in ancient Chinese philosophy is quite distinct from that of Western semiotic circles. Chuang Tzu, one of the most influential ancient Chinese philosophers, concentrates his study on exploring the state of the subject’s selflessness and establishes his own cognitive paradigm of jingshen . This paper uses his statements of “I lost myself” and “The Perfect Man uses his mind like a mirror” in The adjustment of contr…

  • Comorbidity and its impact on 1590 patients with Covid-19 in China

    Open Access•Wei-jie Guan, Wei‐jie Guan et al.•ARTICLE•European Respiratory Journal•2020

BACKGROUND: The coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) outbreak is evolving rapidly worldwide. OBJECTIVE: To evaluate the risk of serious adverse outcomes in patients with COVID-19 by stratifying the comorbidity status. METHODS: We analysed data from 1590 laboratory confirmed hospitalised patients from 575 hospitals in 31 provinces/autonomous regions/provincial municipalities across mainland China between 11 December 2019 and 31 January 2020. We ana…

  • The Cognitive Paradigm of Jingshen

Zhong Chen, Tingting Yao et al.•ARTICLE•Chinese Semiotic Studies•2020

At present, semiotic studies at home and abroad generally attach importance to the interpretation of symbols themselves, while the efforts in researching on the cognitive subject of symbols needs to be intensified and more attention should be paid to the process of symbolic activities. Cultural semiotics of jingshen attempts to construct a brand-new cognitive paradigm, not only to interpret the meaning of symbols, but also to develop the study of…

  • Assessing introspective linguistic judgments quantitatively

Open Access•Zhong Chen, Yuhang Xu et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of East Asian Linguistics•2020

  • Uncertainty in processing relative clauses across East Asian languages

Open Access•Jiwon Yun, Ji‐won Yun et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of East Asian Linguistics•2015

The processing difficulty profile for relative clauses in Chinese, Japanese and Korean represents a challenge for theories of human parsing. We address this challenge using a grammar-based complexity metric, one that reflects a minimalist analysis of relative clauses for all three languages as well as structure-dependent corpus distributions. Together, these define a comprehender’s degree of uncertainty at each point in a sentence. We use this id…

  • Influence of the Kuroshio Current intrusion on Holocene environmental transformation in the South China Sea

    Open Access•Jianguo Liu, Tiegang Li et al.•ARTICLE•The Holocene•2013•References: 4

Numerous studies have been conducted on the evolutionary history of the Kuroshio Current (KC) and other extensions. However, the history of the KC intrusion into the South China Sea (SCS) through the Luzon Strait has been little studied. Here we trace the Holocene developmental history of the KC intrusion and its impact on environmental transformation in the northern SCS. This study involved a comprehensive analysis of planktonic foraminifera, cl…
