High- vs. low-stake choices in life
Moisture-modulated heatwaves
Heatwaves stand as one of the most consequential manifestations of global climate change. Their severity intensifies dramatically when extreme temperatures coincide with high humidity, posing compound threats to human health and natural systems. Here, we employ a three-dimensional (latitude × longitude × time) connectivity framework to analyze moisture-modulated heatwaves through daily lethal heat stress indices from 1979 to 2023. We identify 164…

Quantifying the impact of dams on global streamflow over the period of 1985–2014
The number of dams globally has increased dramatically over the past few decades, providing reliable water resources by regulating natural streamflow. However, assessing the impact of dams on natural streamflow at a large scale remains a challenge due to lack of dam storage variation data. Here we analyzed flow regulation by dams from 1985 to 2014 over 153 basins globally using satellite remote sensing data. Two-thirds of global basins are regula…
Understanding the role of the spatial-temporal variability of catchment water storage capacity and its runoff response using deep learning networks
The land surface of a watershed acts as a large reservoir, with its catchment water storage capacity (CWSC) influencing rainfall-runoff relationship. Estimating CWSC at global grid scale is challenging due to calibration complexity, limited spatial continuity, and data scarcity. To address this, a deep learning-based approach incorporates spatial reconstruction and temporal transfer for capturing spatio-temporal variations in watershed characteri…
Contrasting variations of ecosystem gross primary productivity during flash droughts caused by competing water demand and supply
Flash drought events (FDEs) are projected to increase frequently in a warming world, significantly impacting ecosystem productivity and the global carbon cycle. The development of FDEs, induced by anomalies in different environmental variables, may cause different responses to the ecosystem’s gross primary productivity (GPP). However, the GPP variations and underlying mechanisms during the FDEs have rarely been quantified. This study collected lo…

The Modulation of Intentional Control on Automatic Inhibition in Cognitive Aging
Cognitive aging is an unavoidable phenomenon for human beings. Various theories have been proposed to clarify the mechanism underlying cognitive aging, such as Processing Speed Theory (Salthouse, 1985, 1996), Decline in Inhibition Theory (Hasher Zacks, 1988) and Working Memory Theory (Swanson, 1999), which attribute the age-related decline of cognitive ability to descended processing speed, reduced efficiency of inhibitory control and decreased w…
