  • The effect of different bilingual experiences on attentional control ability

Open Access•Cuicui Wang, Krystal Flemming et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2026

Aims and objectives: Attentional control is an important cognitive ability, and it includes the abilities of attention and inhibitory control. It remains unclear whether a bilingual advantage in attentional control exists and whether different bilingual experiences exert distinct effects on this ability. This study aimed to address these questions. Research Questions: (1) Does bilingual experience enhance attentional control? (2) Do different bil…

  • A mediating effect of sense of coherence on the association between work-family conflict and workplace ostracism among medical staff

Open Access•Na Li, Huifeng Zhang et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2026

Work-family conflict is a significant positive predictor of workplace ostracism among medical staff; moreover, sense of coherence serves as a mediator in this relationship-an effect that is particularly pronounced among those with lower levels of sense of coherence

Open Access•Akipekka Alanko, Peixin Nie et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of New Music Research•2025

While several perceptual procedures exist to assess pitch accuracy of singing, computer-assisted methods are scarce. We developed and tested a method that combines automated frequency analysis with manual note segmentation. PitchAnalyzer2.2 software was used to extract the fundamental frequency and the musical pitches of the audio samples. The onsets, offsets, and steady-state sections of the sung syllables were detected manually to identify the …

  • Do different government policies contribute to electricity suppliers’ renewable energy investments

Open Access•Hua Wang, Weihua Huang et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Infrastructure Policy…•2024

To achieve the energy transition and carbon neutrality targets, governments have implemented multiple policies to incentivize electricity suppliers to invest in renewable energy. Considering different government policies, we construct a renewable energy supply chain consisting of electricity suppliers and electricity retailers. We then explore the impact of four policies on electricity suppliers’ renewable energy investments, environmental impact…

  • Does participation in e-commerce affect fruit farmers’ awareness of green production

Cuicui Wang, Qingmeng Tong et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Environmental Planning…•2024

Based on data for 812 Chinese farmers and a conditional mixed process (CMP) approach, this paper investigates the impact of farmers’ e-commerce participation on their awareness of green production. Main results include: (1) e-commerce participation increases farmers’ overall awareness of green production by 0.771 (i.e. 0.88 standard deviations); meanwhile such impact is more evident for old-generation, low-income and small-scale farmers; (2) risk…

  • Impact of Native Language on Musical Working Memory

Peixin Nie, Barbara Tillmann et al.•ARTICLE•Music Perception An Interdisciplina…•2024

Music and language share similar sound features and cognitive processes, which may lead to bidirectional transfer effects of training in one domain on the processing in the other domain. We investigated the impact of native language on musical working memory by comparing nontonal language (Finnish) speakers and tonal language (Chinese) speakers. For both language backgrounds, musicians and nonmusicians were recruited. In an experimenter-monitored…

  • Epigenome-Wide Analysis of DNA Methylation and Optimism in Women and Men

Cuicui Wang, Dawn L DeMeo et al.•ARTICLE•Psychosomatic Medicine•2023

OBJECTIVE: Higher optimism is associated with reduced mortality and a lower risk of age-related chronic diseases. DNA methylation (DNAm) may provide insight into mechanisms underlying these relationships. We hypothesized that DNAm would differ among older individuals who are more versus less optimistic. METHODS: Using cross-sectional data from two population-based cohorts of women with diverse races/ethnicities ( n = 3816) and men (only White, n …

Open Access•Xinye Qiu, Mahdieh Danesh Yazdi et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2022

Exposure to gaseous air pollutants was associated with higher intensity of psychiatric symptoms among a cohort of older men, particularly in communities with lower socio-economic or housing conditions

  • Association of total pre-existing comorbidities with stroke risk

Open Access•Ya Zhang, Cuicui Wang et al.•ARTICLE•BMC Public Health•2021

The number of pre-existing comorbidities was independently associated with an increased risk of stroke. There was a synergic effect between increased age and a higher number of pre-existing comorbidities on stroke occurrence. Our novel findings emphasize the importance and potential application of pre-existing comorbidities as a risk indicator in stroke prevention

  • Smoking-Related DNA Methylation is Associated with DNA Methylation Phenotypic Age Acceleration

Open Access•Yang Yang, Xu Gao et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2019

DNA methylation may play a critical role in aging and age-related diseases. DNA methylation phenotypic age (DNAmPhenoAge) is a new aging biomarker and predictor of chronic disease risk. While smoking is a strong risk factor for chronic diseases and influences methylation, its influence on DNAmPhenoAge is unknown. We investigated associations of self-reported and epigenetic smoking indicators with DNAmPhenoAge acceleration in a longitudinal aging …

  • A meta-analysis on the relation between fluid intelligence and reading/mathematics

Peng, Peng Peng et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2019•Cited by: 8

This study aimed to determine the relations between fluid intelligence (Gf) and reading/mathematics and possible moderators. A meta-analysis of 680 studies involving 793 independent samples and more than 370,000 participants found that Gf was moderately related to reading, r = .38, 95% CI [.36, .39], and mathematics, r = .41, 95% CI [.39, 44]. Synthesis on the longitudinal correlations showed that Gf and reading/mathematics predicted each other i…

  • A meta-analysis on the relation between reading and working memory

Peng, Peng Peng et al.•ARTICLE•Psychological Bulletin•2018•Cited by: 19

The purpose of this study was to determine the relation between reading and working memory (WM) in the context of 3 major theories: the domain-specificity theory (debate) of WM, the intrinsic cognitive load theory, and the dual process theory. A meta-analysis of 197 studies with 2026 effect sizes found a significant moderate correlation between reading and WM, r = .29, 95% CI [.27, .31]. Moderation analyses indicated that after controlling for pu…

  • Combined atmospheric oxidant capacity and increased levels of exhaled nitric oxide

Open Access•Changyuan Yang, Huichu Li et al.•ARTICLE•Environmental Research Letters•2016

Nitrogen dioxide and ozone are two interrelated oxidative pollutants in the atmosphere. Few studies have evaluated the health effects of combined oxidant capacity (O _x ). We investigated the short-term effects of O _x on fractional exhaled nitric oxide (FeNO), a well-established biomarker for airway inflammation, in a group of chronic obstructive pulmonary disease patients. Real-time concentrations of O _x were obtained by calculating directly t…
