  • Round and Round We Go! The Performative Nature of the Roundabout

    Open Access•Thomas Sullivan, Christopher Livingston•ARTICLE•Space and Culture•2017•References: 22

The American roundabout is dominated by pragmatic engineering-based literature that emphasizes safety, geometry, cost, energy use, aesthetics, and the mediation of congestion. We, however, propose that the roundabout is a tool for a change in political and social practice in how it promotes a shift in users’ behavior and opens up possibilities for subverting aspects of the automobility discourse. In demonstrating how infrastructure facilitates th…

A 'new Irish' American ethnicity surfaced in the 1980s - according to a number of scholars and journalists - and is comprised of what some consider to be more 'authentic' and 'traditional' Irish cultural attributes. Defining authentic and traditional Irishness is complicated, however, by the recent influx and highly visible forms of economic capital and media attention stemming from the Celtic Tiger - the surge of economic prosperity that began i…

    Thomas Sullivan•ARTICLE•Social & Cultural Geography•2012•Cited by: 14•References: 52

Over the past few decades, ethnicity, amongst third generation and beyond descendants of European immigrants in America, is thought to have evolved from a group-oriented protectorate to a more individualized form of identity. 'Symbolic ethnicity' is the name given by sociologists, who, working in the 1980s and 1990s within the confines of traditional assimilation theory, thought this to be the final step in that process. More recently, however, r…

During the period of the mendicant controversy and the sixty years beyond, seventeen monks and canons regular are known to have or …
