Game-Themed Programming Assignment Modules
Despite the proven success of using computer video games as a context for teaching introductory programming (CS1/2) courses, barriers including the lack of adoptable materials, required background expertise (in graphics/games), and institutional acceptance still prevent interested faculty members from experimenting with this approach. Game-themed programming assignment (GTA) modules are designed specifically for these faculty members. The GTA mod…
Sacred Hoop Dreams
The game of basketball serves as a fitting metaphor for the conflicts and tensions of life. It involves both cooperation and competition, selflessness and ego. In the hands of a gifted writer like Sherman Alexie, those paradoxes become even deeper and more revealing. In his short story collections, The Lone Ranger and Tonto Fistfight in Heaven and The Toughest Indian in the World, his debut novel, Reservation Blues, and his recent young adult nov…
Do You See What I See? The Impact of Age Differences in Time Perspective on Visual Attention
In young adults, having a relatively long time perspective has been associated with a more abstract, holistic approach to cognitive tasks, as opposed to the more concrete, detailed approach associated with having a more limited or near-future focus ( Trope & Liberman, 2003). Here we studied the impact of age differences in temporal perspective on performance on a classic visual attention task ( Navon, 1977) that allowed for an orientation toward …

Prothrombotic Effects of Environmental Stress
Mental stress can affect a range of variables relevant to hemostasis and thrombosis. However, research has not clarified whether these effects occur as part of a generalized sympathoadrenal response or whether stress-induced increases in catecholamines and blood pressure have selective and independent effects on hematologic variables. This study assessed the effects of mental and cold pressor stress on platelet activation, hematocrit, and total p…
Chronic effects of high salt intake and conflict stress on blood pressure in primates
Plasma norepinephrine pharmacokinetics during mental challenge
We simultaneously infused tracer-labeled norepinephrine (NE) and isoproterenol (ISO) intravenously into 14 subjects to measure forearm and total body NE pharmacokinetics at rest and in response to mental challenge (video game or cognitive task). Mental challenge was associated with significantly increased heart rate (24%), systolic blood pressure (13%), cardiac output (impedance cardiography, 9%), forearm blood flow (38%), and the rate of release…
Circulatory, Plasma Catecholamine, Cortisol, Lipid, and Psychological Responses to a Real-Life Stress (Third Molar Extractions)
We studied the circulatory, psychological, plasma catecholamine, cortisol, and lipid responses to a real-life stress--third molar extractions--in 21 patients and the effects of sedation with intravenous diazepam and of inclusion of epinephrine with the local anesthetic. Across all patients, the surgery was associated with significantly increased heart rate (25%), systolic blood pressure (13%) and cardiac output--as indicated using impedance cardi…
