Enhancing Community Engagement in Research
The Barbershop Talk project is a community-based clinical trial testing the effectiveness of barbershop-placed Alcohol Screening, Brief Intervention, and Referral to Treatment in reducing unhealthy drinking among Black men. Although engaging community partners in research effectively reduces health disparities, best practices to support meaningful engagement are needed. This article presents the use of a premortem analysis, a proactive strategy t…
How Can Liberal Democracies Defend Themselves against Tyranny
Tyranny in the modern era turned toward totalitarianism through the idea that human nature needed to be “perfected”; communism's enemy was a matter of class, Nazism's a matter of race. Democracy would seem by definition to resist such ideologies, but even the modern democratic state now possesses mechanisms that can be turned in tyrannical directions: regulatory powers, social welfare systems, and the new tools of artificial intelligence and “big…
Function and Change in China

Remembering—and Defending—The International States System

Having forgotten this lesson of histo…

Excavations in the City of London
The Department of Urban Archaeology, City of London, was set up in December 1973 as part of Guildhall Museum, now the Museum of London. Since then it has excavated sixteen sites and carried out numerous watching briefs. Most of the formal excavations have been conducted on the vital waterfront sites, made available for the first time, and on the Roman and medieval defences of the City. Important evidence of the elusive Saxon occupation is gradual…
