  • Ambivalence, Insurgency, and Mobilization Interrupted at the Periphery of Fortaleza, Northeast Brazil

    Luminiţa‐anda Mandache, Luminiţa-Anda Mandache•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•2025•References: 28

This article questions the meaning of the urban periphery for the children and grandchildren of insurgent citizens (Holston 2008). It illustrates how two types of youth—the type who experienced an important degree of social mobility, and the typical youth who are not integrated into the labor force—relate to their home community, an urban periferia in Northeast Brazil, and consequently do or do not participate in collective action. While insurgen…

  • Post-Liberal Citizenship at Brazil's Urban Margins

    Luminiţa‐anda Mandache, Luminiţa-Anda Mandache et al.•ARTICLE•Journal of Anthropological Research•2025•Cited by: 1•References: 28

This introduction challenges conventional understandings of citizenship in Brazil by moving beyond the limitations of liberal and insurgent frameworks that have dominated scholarship for the past fifty years. It argues that these frameworks, while valuable in their time, often fail to capture the complexities of contemporary political life, particularly the roles of (digital) materiality, consumption, and ambivalence. The special issue addresses …

Open Access•Luminiţa‐anda Mandache, Luminiţa-Anda Mandache et al.•ARTICLE•Teaching and Learning Anthropology•2021

Reflecting on our recent experience of online teaching with mainly historically marginalized students at the U.S.-Mexico border, we emphasize the importance of engaging a critical pedagogy of place by creating communities of trust. We describe how the COVID-19 pandemic was experienced among us and our students, focusing on how it impacted practical aspects and the context of our teaching. We discuss four teaching strategies we implemented during …

  • The Road Back to Serfdom: Solidarity Economies on the Periphery of Fortaleza, Brazil, 1970-2016

    Open Access•Luminiţa‐anda Mandache, Luminiţa-Anda Mandache•ARTICLE•Latin American Perspectives•2020•Cited by: 2•References: 22

A case study of the Palmas Bank project, on the periphery of Fortaleza, Brazil, explores the contradictions inherent in the country's solidarity economy project. The solidarity economy, rooted in the local practices of the liberation theology movement, can hardly be seen as a human or alternative economy because its proximity to party politics through funding and the institutionalization of the movement has affected not only its long-term social …

  • Emotional overlap and the analytic potential of emotions in anthropology

    Open Access•Lindsey Raisa Feldman, Luminiţa‐anda Mandache et al.•ARTICLE•Ethnography•2019•Cited by: 4•References: 26

Emotions have historically played a marginal role in many arenas of anthropological analysis, often limited to describing certain aspects of research informants' lives, or explaining the ethnographer's own fieldwork experience. This paper proposes a more nuanced approach, pointing to the analytic potential of what we call emotional overlap. Emotional overlap occurs in ethnographic moments when the emotions of both the informant and the ethnograph…
