This introduction challenges conventional understandings of citizenship in Brazil by moving beyond the limitations of liberal and insurgent frameworks that have dominated scholarship for the past fifty years. It argues that these frameworks, while valuable in their time, often fail to capture the complexities of contemporary political life, particularly the roles of (digital) materiality, consumption, and ambivalence. The special issue addresses this gap by exploring how these previously neglected arenas are now central to understanding citizenship, political practice, subjectivity, and discourse at various scales of participation. By examining these new modulations of citizenship, the introduction calls for a reevaluation of anthropology’s own liberal biases and a renewed focus on the unexpected and unfinished aspects of political life in Brazil’s urban margins
