In a master thesis on food waste the importance of culturally defined behaviour is addressed. By constructing a “Food Waste Game”, experimental ethnographer Xinyi Jiang show how definitions of what can be considered as food waste change. The Food Waste Game give evidence to sorting by association, meaning that packaging of different materials is considered to be food waste

When mourning pets, customs and rituals are in many ways similar to what is used for humans. Graves are decorated with symbols such as crosses, stones with inscriptions, flowers, and candles. On the internet, special web-pages are designed, devoted to the mourning of loved animals. Quite new in a Swedish context are announcements in daily and weekly press, where the obituary notices are designed just the same as for deceased persons. For owners t…
Wasting
From the beginning of the article: Waste is a word with complex connotations. As in T.S.Eliot’s famous poem “The Waste Land” from a war-torn Europe of 1922, it may include the double meaning that signifies both “deserted” and “rubbish”. Then there is wasting away, as in disappearing or losing strength, wasting as squandering or destroying, wasted as in consumed. We may talk about a wasted life, a waster, a wasteful activity or a waste product. Bu…
Bioekonomi — mellan människa och ting
Taking out patents from biological, human tissues often raises debate. Why is that? Answers to these, and similar questions, are often formulated from an ethical point of view. In this article cultural perspectives are used to reflect on patents. Relying on Igor Kopytoff's article The cultural biography of things: commoditization as process, I argue that the unease associated with patents has to do with the wish to keep a strict borderline betwee…

All forms of fieldwork put the researcher in a number of tricky situations. Our project "Gene ethics, gene technology, and everyday ethics" is no exception. It involves well known difficulties such as the impossibility of "going native" coupled with ethnocentrism, but also representation critique and reflexivity. The work in our cross-disciplinary project brings several of these questions of method and analysis to the fore at the same time as new…

Att skapa liv och utforska död
Artificial reproduction and the handling of dead bodies give us important information about the interaction between societal structures, identity, and the body. They also tell us something about the extent to which it is collective or personal needs that are signalled via the body. On the basis of the two empirical fields studied here, we think that we can say that the experience of living in a high-tech society, where questions of life and death…
