Does free tuition promote equity in higher education? Impact on academic performance of low-income university students
Preliminary Results of a Portuguese Version of Prevent for Work Questionnaire (P4wq)
Modeling appeals in university accreditation in Chile
In Chile, university administrators may appeal to a secondary agency to challenge the accreditation decisions of the primary national accreditation agency. The study analyzes the appeal judgments, using an empirical approach to identify arguments used by the secondary agency to justify its decisions. The analyses identify several factors, such as improvements since the last accreditation, faculty productivity, and financial standing, as the most …

The Right to be Fairly Assessed
Outcomes of Femoral Arterial Catheterisation in Neonates

A Focus Group Study Observing Maternal Intention to Use a WIC Education App
Objective In this study, we sought to determine technology acceptance of a mobile application (app) to facilitate healthy behaviors as perceived by English- and Spanish-speaking participants of the Supplemental Nutrition Program for Women, Infants, and Children (WIC). Methods Our sample was 48 mothers (78% Hispanic-American) at WIC clinics in south-central Texas. Through 6 focus groups, we explored user intention of a wireframe app prototype. Dis…
User-centered Design of a Texas WIC App
The enthusiasm of focus group participants for a comprehensive WIC app suggests that this initiative is timely, and that an app has potential to improve health behaviors. Future research should continue the user-centered design process through further evaluation of prototype features, incorporating cultural preferences at every step
Opening a side-gate
The article describes a test-blind admission initiative in a Chilean research university aimed at expanding the inclusion of talented, albeit educationally and socially disadvantaged, students. The outcomes of the test-blind admission cohort were compared with those of students admitted via the regular admission procedure to the same academic program. The outcomes of interest were first-term college grade point average, dropout rates, graduation …
Achievement versus aptitude in college admissions
Are Students' Perceptions of Parental Acceptance of Academic Dishonesty Associated with its Occurrence
The study explored the association between the perceptions 175 Chilean business students held about their parents' acceptance of academic dishonesty and their self-reports of academic dishonesty. Regressing scores for parental acceptance onto self-reported academic dishonesty indicated it accounted for a small (2.2%) but significant amount of variance beyond demographic and academic performance variables. Effect size analysis based on structure c…
Association of Perceived Parental Attitudes Towards Premarital Sex With Initiation of Sexual Intercourse in Adolescence
Association of Perceived Parental Attitudes towards Premarital Sex with Initiation of Sexual Intercourse in Adolescence
To assess the association between perceived parental disapproval of premarital sex, quality of the parent-daughter relationship, and initiation of sexual intercourse, a sample of 614 economically deprived female students in Chile were tested. The perception of disapproval of premarital sex by the mother along with a good mother-daughter relationship appears to constitute a buffer against early initiation of sexual activity in adolescence. Results…
Comparison of Students' and Faculty's Perceptions of Occurrence of Dishonest Academic Behaviors
Examination of estimates of prevalence of 28 dishonest academic behaviors provided by 217 students and 38 faculty members from the same Latin American institution shows faculty's perceptions differed from those held by students. Students perceived dishonest behaviors to be more widespread while faculty's estimates were on average more conservative and closer to actual self-reported rates. These results are not consistent with findings from a stud…
