The role of social media on psychological wellbeing from the perspectives of young people with type 1 diabetes and their caregivers: A qualitative study
This study explores the perceived influence of social media on psychological wellbeing in young people living with type 1 diabetes. Young people aged 13-20 years (N = 19) with type 1 diabetes and caregivers (diabetes healthcare providers and parents) (N = 8) took part in an online focus group or interview. Thematic analysis was used to analyse the data. Participants reflected on social media's capacity to facilitate accessible peer learning and e…
The Coronavirus Corpus: Design, construction, and use
This paper discusses the creation and use of the Coronavirus Corpus, which is currently (March 2021) 900 million words in size, and which will probably be about one billion words in size by May–June 2021. The Coronavirus Corpus is a subset of the NOW Corpus (News on the Web), which is currently about 12.1 billion words in size and which grows by about two billion words each year. These two corpora are updated every night, with about 6–10 million …
The TV and Movies corpora: Design, construction, and use
This paper discusses the creation and use of the TV Corpus (subtitles from 75,000 episodes, 325 million words, 6 English-speaking countries, 1950s-2010s) and the Movies Corpus (subtitles from 25,000 movies, 200 million words, 6 English-speaking countries, 1930s–2010s), which are available at English-Corpora.org . The corpora compare well to the BNC-Conversation data in terms of informality, lexis, phraseology, and syntax. But at 525 million words…
Historical shifts with the into-causative construction in American English
The syntactic and semantic properties of theinto-causativeconstruction, involving the pattern 'V NP into V-ing', has been studied in some detail, but its historical development has received less attention. This paper looks at the historical shifts in the construction with much more representative and robust corpora than have been used for previous studies. Based on nearly 11,440 tokens from more than 950 million words of text, the paper considers…
Sorting them all out: Exploring the separable phrasal verbs of English
The importance of robust corpora in providing more realistic descriptions of variation in English grammar
This paper provides many concrete examples of how English grammar varies in important ways, as a function of differences between genres, as a function of language change, and as a function of differences between dialects. We also show – in great detail – how several recent corpora – such as COCA (2008), COHA (2011), GloWbE (2013), and the BYU interface to the Google Book n-grams (2012) – allow us to accurately examine this full range of variation…
Expanding horizons in the study of World Englishes with the 1.9 billion word Global Web-based English Corpus (GloWbE)
In this paper, we provide an overview of the new GloWbE Corpus — the Corpus of Global Web-based English. GloWbE is based on 1.9 billion words in 1.8 million web pages from 20 different English-speaking countries. Approximately 60 percent of the corpus comes from informal blogs, and the rest from a wide range of other genres and text types. Because of its large size, its architecture and interface, the corpus can be used to examine many types of v…

A New Academic Vocabulary List
This article presents our new Academic Vocabulary List (AVL), derived from a 120-million-word academic subcorpus of the 425-million-word Corpus of Contemporary American English (COCA; Davies 2012). We first explore reasons why a new academic core list is warranted, and why such a list is still needed in English language education. We also provide a detailed description of the large academic corpus from which the AVL was derived, as well as the ro…
Making Google Books n-grams useful for a wide range of research on language change
The “standard” Google Books n-grams were released by Google in 2010, and they include more than 155 billion words of data for the American English data alone. Unfortunately, the standard interface is far too simplistic to allow many types of useful research on this massive dataset. In this paper, I discuss an alternative “advanced” architecture and interface for these datasets, which is freely available at googlebooks.byu.edu. This resource allow…
Resilience: New Utopia or New Tyranny? Reflection about the Potentials and Limits of the Concept of Resilience in Relation to Vulnerability Reduction Programmes
Resilience is becoming influential in development and vulnerability reduction sectors such as social protection, disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation. Policy makers, donors and international development agencies are now increasingly referring to the term. In that context, the objective of this paper was to assess in a critical manner the advantages and limits of resilience. While the review highlights some positive elements –in p…
The experience of individuals with renal failure participating in home haemodialysis: An interpretative phenomenological analysis
This study explored the experience of individuals with renal failure undertaking home haemodialysis (HHD). Semi-structured interviews were conducted with six participants who were active HHD users in a UK region. Participants' accounts were transcribed verbatim and analysed using an interpretative phenomenological approach. Three main themes were identified: (1) embracing treatment and lifestyle freedom and flexibility; (2) re-establishing a sens…
The Corpus of Contemporary American English as the first reliable monitor corpus of English
The Corpus of Contemporary American English is the first large, genre-balanced corpus of any language, which has been designed and constructed from the ground up as a ‘monitor corpus’, and which can be used to accurately track and study recent changes in the language. The 400 million words corpus is evenly divided between spoken, fiction, popular magazines, newspapers, and academic journals. Most importantly, the genre balance stays almost exactl…

Aspects of Roman History 82BC-AD14: A Source-Based Approach
Aspects of Roman History 82BC–AD14 examines the political and military history of Rome and its empire in the Ciceronian and Augustan ages. It is an indispensable introduction to this central period of Roman History for all students of Roman history, from pre-university to undergraduate level. This is the first book since H.H. Scullard’s From the Gracchi to Nero, published two generations ago, to offer a full introductory account of one of the mos…
Social Protection: Responding to a Global Crisis
The current global financial crisis will have adverse effects on poor people in developing countries in both the short- and long-term. While the complexity of this crisis makes its path difficult to predict, recent advances in social protection thinking and practice provide a body of experience for developing countries and development agencies to draw upon in responding to the crisis. Recognising that the crisis will produce pressures on national…
Adaptive Social Protection’: Synergies for Poverty Reduction
Global processes and crises are changing and deepening the risks already faced by poor and vulnerable people in rural areas, particularly those involved in agriculture and other ecosystemdependent livelihoods. Reliance on subsistence agriculture means the impact of stresses and shocks (such as droughts or floods) are felt keenly by rural poor people, who depend directly on food system outcomes for their survival. This has profound implications fo…
School-Based Screening to Identify At-Risk Students Not Already Known to School Professionals: The Columbia Suicide Screen
Objectives. We sought to determine the degree of overlap between students identified through school-based suicide screening and those thought to be at risk by school administrative and clinical professionals. Methods. Students from 7 high schools in the New York metropolitan area completed the Columbia Suicide Screen; 489 of the 1729 students screened had positive results. The clinical status of 641 students (73% of those who had screened positiv…

The Corpus of Contemporary American English ( COCA ), which was released online in early 2008, is the first large and diverse corpus of American English. In this paper, we first discuss the design of the corpus - which contains more than 385 million words from 1990-2008 (20 million words each year), balanced between spoken, fiction, popular magazines, newspapers, and academic journals. We also discuss the unique relational databases architecture,…
New Directions in Spanish and Portuguese Corpus Linguistics
Within the past decade several large, freely-available online corpora of Spanish and Portuguese have become available. With these new corpora, researchers of Spanish and Portuguese can now carry out the same type of corpus-based research that has been done for other languages (such as English) for years. This includes advanced research on morphological and syntactic variation (thanks to full functionality with substring searches, part of speech t…

Adolescents' Inconsistency in Self-Reported Smoking: A Comparison of Reports in School and in Household Settings
Extent and sources of inconsistency in self-reported cigarette smoking between self-administered school surveys and household interviews was examined in two longitudinal multiethnic adolescent samples, the urban Transition to Nicotine Dependence in Adolescence (TND) (N = 832) and the National Longitudinal Study of Adolescent Health (Add Health) (N = 4,414). Inconsistency was defined as a positive report of smoking in school followed by a negative…
Pointing Out Frequent Phrasal Verbs: A Corpus‐Based Analysis
This study attempts to shed new light on one of the most notoriously challenging aspects of English language instruction—the English phrasal verbs. The highest frequency phrasal verb constructions in the 100‐million‐word British National Corpus are identified and analyzed. The findings indicate that a small subset of 20 lexical verbs combines with eight adverbial particles (160 combinations) to account for more than one half of the 518,923 phrasa…
Traumatized mothers can change their minds about their toddlers: Understanding how a novel use of videofeedback supports positive change of maternal attributions
This study explored the use of a brief experimental intervention that integrates principles of infant-parent psychotherapy, videofeedback, controlled exposure to child distress in the context of parental posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), and stimulation of parental reflective functioning (RF). The Clinician Assisted Videofeedback Exposure Session (CAVES) was applied to 32 interpersonal violence-exposed mothers of very young children (8-50 mon…

Friendship Networks, Intimacy, and Illicit Drug Use in Young Adulthood: A Comparison of Two Competing Theories
Theories of delinquency posit two opposing views on the social interactions of deviant individuals. Social control theory assumes that deviants have poor relationships with others. Cultural deviance theory assumes that deviant individuals are similar to nondeviants and have strong ties with members of their friendship networks. These theories have not been empirically tested for male and female users of illicit drugs. Descriptive and multivariate…
Parental and Peer Influences on Adolescents' Educational Plans: Some Further Evidence
The specific influence of parents and peers on adolescents' educational aspirations is examined in a relational sample of matched adolescent-parent-best friend triads (N=762). A nonrecursive model of peer influence is also estimated. Most previous estimates of interpersonal influences are based on the adolescent's perceptions of the significant other's attitudes or behaviors rather than on the significant other's self-reports of these attributes.…

Labor Force Experiences of a National Sample of Young Adult Men: The Role of Drug Involvement
Maternal smoking during pregnancy and smoking by adolescent daughters
OBJECTIVES. Since cigarette smoking in adolescence represents a crucial entry point in the progression to illicit drugs, risk factors for adolescent smoking have public health implications. The influence of mothers on children's smoking appears to be greater than that of fathers. To explain the selective influence of mothers, we examined the consequences of maternal smoking during pregnancy in two longitudinal samples. METHODS. Analyses were cond…

The Validity of Student Evaluation of Teaching in Higher Education: Love me, love my lectures
This paper examines the validity of student evaluation of teaching (SET) in universities. Recent research demonstrates that evaluations can be influenced by factors other than teaching ability such as student characteristics and the physical environment. In this study, it was predicted that students' perception of the lecturer would significantly predict teaching effectiveness ratings. Using an 11-item student rating scale (N = 199), a two-factor…
