Workplace Health and Wellbeing in Small and Medium Sized Enterprises (SMEs): A Mixed Methods Evaluation of Provision and Support Uptake
Today's challenging times highlight the need for workplaces to support employee wellbeing. Workplaces can offer a means to improve employee wellbeing and promote health initiatives. However, small and medium-sized enterprises (SMEs) are less likely than larger organizations to engage with workplace wellbeing initiatives or offer wellbeing provision. This study, conducted in an urban area in central England, explores SME engagement with local gove…

Reflections on Planning Education and Practices in Melbourne
Reflecting on my involvement in planning education at RMIT (Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology) University since the early 1980s and with Urban Policy and Research, 1982–2003, there was a degree of optimism about what urban planning, through education and publication, might achieve, given the relatively favourable political and institutional circumstances of the time. The normalisation of neoliberal thinking across Australia by 2000, however…
Dostoevsky, Girard, Levinas
In his interview with René Girard, Benoît Chantre connects the mimetic theory of René Girard with the ethics of Emmanuel Levinas, observing, “It is in the confrontation with otherness that the individual acquires self-consciousness. The self has no meaning except in the relationship, even when the relationship takes the form of a duel. Can we not say, following Levinas, that only experience of war can allow us to think about reconciliation?” Gira…
The Mystery of Black Rice: Food, Medicinal, and Spiritual Uses of Oryza glaberrima by Maroon Communities in Suriname and French Guiana
During plantation slavery, African rice (Oryza glaberrima Steud.) was widely cultivated in the Americas but was soon replaced by Asian rice (Oryza sativa L.). Maroons, descendants of Africans who escaped slavery in Suriname and French Guiana, continue to cultivate African rice. Genomic research linked this rice to an O. glaberrima variety in the Ivory Coast. Based on interviews with 99 Maroon farmers, of whom 23 cultivate black rice, we describe …
Local planning cultures? What Glasgow, Melbourne and Toronto planners say
This paper centres on what 51 planning practitioners working across the metropolises of Glasgow, Melbourne and Toronto said in open-ended interviews about themselves and their work under current neoliberal policy settings. Planning systems were redesigned under these settings to attract inward investment more readily, local planners’ practices to be compliant. Through an interrogation of interview transcripts, the aim here to discern whether olde…
Literary and Sociological Approaches to the Analysis of C.B.C. English-Language Radio-Drama
This paper is an exploration of approaches to the analysis of CBC English language radio drama. Using a selected drama for illustration, we explore literary and sociological modes of analysis and the benefits derived from their combination. The objective is to develop a theoretical and methodological base for the study of radio drama as a cultural product and the relations between the structures of these works and of idea Systems within English-C…
How Senior Glaswegian Planners are Adjusting to the Scottish Government’s Modernization Agenda
This paper is grounded in what 15 experienced Glaswegian planners said about their work. Many spoke of their misgivings about the Scottish government’s efforts to modernize national and local planning practices, whereby, in their view, they are expected to be facilitators of economic development above all other considerations. They spoke of how they thought planning should be practised and in their resource-constrained circumstances, how they str…

The role of special advocates: Advocacy, due process and the adversarial tradition
The rise in secret courts or ‘closed material proceedings’ (CMPs) in recent years has called into question our commitment to long-cherished principles of open justice and due process. This debate has somewhat overshadowed the role of special advocates, who are appointed to represent the interests of parties excluded from such hearings. These advocates pose a challenge to the traditions of advocacy in the adversarial system but an international co…

Integrating a Socio-Legal Approach to Evidence in the International Criminal Tribunals (Part 2)
In the last issue a number of articles were published from a symposium held at University College Dublin on integrating a socio-legal approach to evidence in the international criminal tribunals. The articles focused on specific socio-legal projects carried out in the field of evidence within the international criminal context, and on how such research can enrich our understanding of international criminal law and practice. The articles in this i…
The Effect of Legal Culture on the Development of International Evidentiary Practice: From the ‘Robing Room’ to the ‘Melting Pot’
This paper draws on some of the preliminary findings of a small pilot study which aimed to discover what evidentiary challenges a range of practitioners with experience of different international trials faced in the cases they were involved in, and what practices were developed to deal with these challenges. The findings in this study are based on the data collected from The Hague-based institutions, the ICC, the ICTY, the ICTY and ICTR Appeals C…

Other Others: Levinas, Literature, Transcultural Studies
Emmanuel Levinas's writings express a good deal of ambivalence regarding the ethical dimensions of art: while Levinas never hesitated to appropriate Dostoevsky's Starets Zosima's declaration that “each of us is responsible for everyone and everything, but I more so than others” or to proclaim philosophy's indebtedness to Shakespeare, his “Reality and Its Shadow” rightfully has given literary critics pause. Jill Robbins's influential Altered Readi…
Attachment and mental and physical health: Self-compassion and mattering as mediators.
Research shows a strong link between adult attachment and mental and physical health, but little is known about the mechanisms that underlie these relationships. The present study examined self-compassion and mattering, two constructs from positive psychology literature, as potential mediators. Using survey data from a sample of 208 college students, relationships among attachment, self-compassion, mattering, and functional health were explored. …

Re-Conceptualizing the Right of Silence as an Effective Fair Trial Standard
As the European Court of Human Rights has come to qualify the privilege against self-incrimination and the right of silence in recent decisions, this article argues that the Court has failed to provide a convincing rationale for these rights. It is claimed that within the criminal process the right of silence should be distinguished from the privilege against self-incrimination and given enhanced effect in order to uphold the protective and parti…
Spiritual journey to Hajj: Australian and Pakistani experience and expectations
This paper explores and examines the interesting and important phenomenon of Hajj from a marketing strategy and ethnographic perspective. There has been little academic qualitative research from a marketing strategy perspective on Hajj (once a year Muslim pilgrimage to Mecca), examining the perceptions of Muslims going on this significant spiritual journey. This paper also attempts to contribute to the theory on spiritual tourism and journeys and…

Of Rights and Roles
Although the rules governing police interviews with suspects in custody have been well regulated since the introduction of the Police and Criminal Evidence Act 1984 (PACE) in England and Wales and Northern Ireland, concern has been expressed over the years about the vulnerable position of young suspects within the PACE regime and about the adequacy of the safeguards provided. This paper discusses the nature of police interviews with young people …
People and Wildlife: Conflict or Coexistence?
Human-wildlife conflict is a major issue in conservation. As people encroach into natural habitats, and as conservation efforts restore wildlife to areas where they may have been absent for generations, contact between people and wild animals is growing. Some species, even the beautiful and endangered, can have serious impacts on human lives and livelihoods. Tigers kill people, elephants destroy crops and African wild dogs devastate sheep herds l…

Dimensions of occupational mobility in the Republic of Ireland
We present data on occupational mobility in the Republic of Ireland in greater detail than has been available previously. The primary datum is a 14×14 mobility table. The categories are subclassifications of the nine categories used in analyses of other European societies by Erikson, Goldthorpe, and others. The refined categories show details of mobility in Ireland that are important for understanding the complete structure of association between…

The Greek Novelists, Miscellanea
A word of apology may be due for the loose arrangement of this paper; but, as an orderly progress through the 600 odd pages of the Didot Scriptores Erotici was out of the question, I have simply taken a number of passages on which I had corrections to propose, appending to each a few lines of comment, and adding, where feasible, a selection of texts amenable, in my judegment, to the same or an analogous treatment. The Aftermath of Brussels
Now that the negotiations on Britain's application for membership of the European Economic Community have broken down, many people are asking what will happen next. Few are suggesting that the Common Market itself is in danger of disintegration because of the arrogant manner in which General de Gaulle chose to break off the negotiations, with complete disregard for the wishes of France's fellow members. There can be no doubt that France never wan…

Pampas Deer in Uruguay
Pampas deer, which are on the verge of extinction in Argentina, have declined in Uruguay to an estimated 1000 animals. Mostly they occur in small scattered herds, which have survived because of their remoteness and the absence of sheep, and because a small number of landowners have protected them. Sheep, however, are likely to spread because rising oil prices have made synthetic fibres more expensive and wool more competitive. The authors recomme…

Algorithm for Independence
In the development of public policy there apparently exists a lack of appreciation with regard to the effect of technology on society. This threatens to impose an involuntary state of dependency. An approach to a solution of this problem is suggested in this paper
