The social structure of Brexit and the crisis of globalisation: Towards an analysis of the disjuncture
Despite much protracted debate, there is still no consensus among social scientists as to why a majority of Britons voted to leave the European Union in June 2016. This paper constructs a sociology of Brexit and seeks to interpret the fractious constellations on either side of the Brexit disjuncture. Taking as its point of the departure the resurgence of sociological interest in class in the wake of Brexit and with the rise of right-wing populism…
Confronting capital’s care fix: Care Through the Lens of Democracy
Purpose The purpose of this paper is to propose to expand the political economic understanding of a “fix”, that is, capital’s ability to overcome crises of profitability through a displacement of its crisis tendencies, to include an analytical attention to the gendered, sexualised and racialised unwaged and underpaid (caring) labour that reproduces labour power within a capitalist economy. Design/methodology/approach A “care fix”, the author argu…
Harnessing the Social: State, Crisis and (Big) Society
The article analyses the UK government's plans to create a social investment market. The Big Society as political economy is understood as a response to three aspects of a multi-faceted, global crisis: a crisis of capital accumulation; a crisis of social reproduction; and, a fiscal crisis of the state. While the neoliberal state is retreating from the sphere of social reproduction, further off-loading the costs of social reproduction onto the unw…

Occupy London
This essay brings together the authors' experiences and observations with reflections gathered in an open workshop about Occupy London organized under the banner of the Tent City University working group. The essay posits Occupy London not as one entity but as an organizing process located in more than one area within the City of London. They see Occupy London as both a powerful idea and as a material practice. The authors reflect on the social c…
The Waitress: On Affect, Method and (Re)presentation
This article engages the embodied experiences of the waitress with the question of how to (re)present these in their affective dimensions. In service work, the body needs to be able to combine conflicting capacities; to lure, entice and satisfy on the one hand and to be resilient, fast and astute on the other. If an attention to affect allows a shift from the question of what a phenomenon means or represents, to that of what a phenomenon does, th…
WSF, ethics and pedagogy
In this paper we intend to explore the potential of the WSF as a space to promote the emergence of a new culture of politics - as a new way of making meaning about the world, of "thinking beyond modernity" and "imagining otherwise". We start with an analysis of the ethics of the Forum and what we see as limitations for creating the conditions of nurturing such a way of thinking politics. We then examine the types of ethics, vision of the other wo…
