  • Managing complex, distributed environments

    Open Access•Karen Ruhleder, Brigitte Jordan•ARTICLE•First Monday•2001

This paper is based on an ethnographic study of a company with widely distributed holdings within a volatile industry. The need for this distributed organization to respond as a unified whole to a rapidly changing environ«ment required it to confront the uncertainties and contingencies introduced by invisibility, distance, and fragmentation of information. In order to transcend the boundaries of time and space, the company coupled new technologie…

  • Reflective collaborative learning on the Web

    Open Access•Karen Ruhleder, Michael B Twidale•ARTICLE•First Monday•2000

We draw on the music master class as an established face-to-face pedagogical model as one that supports reflective, collaborative learning practices. We then illustrate how this model is being reinterpreted and extended within the context of online learning communities exploring the skills of user interface design

  • The Virtual Ethnographer

    Open Access•Karen Ruhleder•ARTICLE•CAM•2000•Cited by: 13•References: 2

The venues in which we carry out our fieldwork increasingly intertwine real and virtual activities as participants move materials and interactions online. This change in the nature of the field sites we observe requires an enhancement or even rethinking of traditional methodologies for studying work. This article draws on two studies-one in a distributed corporation and one of an online master's degree program-to outline some of the questions the…

  • Steps Toward an Ecology of Infrastructure

Susan Leigh Star, Karen Ruhleder•ARTICLE•Information Systems Research•1996

We analyze a large-scale custom software effort, the Worm Community System (WCS), a collaborative system designed for a geographically dispersed community of geneticists. There were complex challenges in creating this infrastructural tool, ranging from simple lack of resources to complex organizational and intellectual communication failures and tradeoffs. Despite high user satisfaction with the system and interface, and extensive user needs asse…

  • Computerization and changes to infrastructures for knowledge work

    Karen Ruhleder•ARTICLE•The Information Society•1995•References: 14

This article analyzes the impact of information technologies, particularly an on‐line data bank for Greek textual materials, on one domain of knowledge work, classical scholarship. It discusses these impacts within a framework derived from Bateson's theory of learning, characterizing these impacts at three levels of conceptual complexity. The first level affects individual work practices and resource requirements; the second requires local renego…

  • Reconstructing Artifacts, Reconstructing Work

    Open Access•Karen Ruhleder•ARTICLE•Science Technology & Human Values•1995•Cited by: 8•References: 24

New media can change the way that artifacts are constructed and used. Changes in these artifacts, in turn, will be reflected in work practices and processes. This article draws on an empirical investigation of the impact of computer-based technologies on classical scholarship to discuss some of the ramifications that a switch in medium may have for work. The article defines both traditional and computer-based tools as "packages" that consist of a…

  • Steps towards an ecology of infrastructure

Open Access•Susan Leigh Star, Karen Ruhleder•CONFERENCE•Proceedings of the 1994 ACM…•1994

This paper analyzes the initial phases of a large-scale custom software effort, the Worm Community System (WCS), a collaborative system designed for a geographically dispersed community of geneticists. Despite high user satisfaction with the system and interface, and extensive user feedback and analysis, many users experienced difficulties in signing on and use, ranging from simple lack of resources to complex organizational and intellectual trad…

  • Pulling down’ Books vs. ‘Pulling Up’ Files

    Open Access•Karen Ruhleder•ARTICLE•The Sociological Review•1994

The culture of classical scholarship is changing as traditional paper-based materials are being repackaged in electronic form. This paper investigates the changes effected by a Greek textual databank, the Thesaurus Linguae Graecae (TLG). The TLG changes the textual landscape, making available to scholars texts previously accessible with difficulty—or not at all. At the same time, it changes the traditional relationship between scholar and text. ‘…
