Participatory video proposals: A tool for empowering farmer groups in rural innovation processes
Cuba: A Cultural History, by Alan West-Durán
Experience with participatory video proposals: Assisting Community Organisations With Innovation Project Planning
In conventional agricultural research for development (AR4D) projects, decisions about rural innovation activities often rest with scientists. In transdisciplinary AR4D projects in Kenya and Tanzania, we designed a methodology aiming to give key decision-making rights to the farmer groups involved. Five collaborating groups were facilitated to explore different innovation possibilities and they then put forward ideas that they wished to implement…

In the past three decades dozens of works on salsa, Cuban music, Latino dance forms, and Latin jazz have appeared in print. This growing bibliography has devel oped to some extent as part of a search for the roots of popular dance music both in the Latino diaspora in the United States and in the countries of origin of the Latino communities. The books reviewed here are recent examples of this emerging corpus of knowledge about Latino culture. Ces…
Translating Empire: José Martí, Migrant Latino Subjects, and American Modernities
Laura Lomas’s monograph is a superb contribution to the scholarship on José Martí and the ways in which he and other Latino authors in the late nineteenth-century United States laid the foundations for a critique of a rising United States by viewing its relationship to Latin America from their anticolonial perspective as migrants. The book connects with a new, critical literature in American Studies about the significance of the rise of the U.S. …

This book explores the complexity of Cuban dance music and the webs that connect it, musically and historically, to other Caribbean music, to salsa, and to Latin Jazz. Establishing a scholarly foundation for the study of this music, the author introduces a set of terms, definitions, and empirical information that allow for a broader, more informed discussion. He presents musical biographies of prominent performers Cachao López, Mongo Santamaría, …
