Exploding Myths of Female Desire for the Twenty-First Century
Hercules in dinner jackets and bacchantes on bicycles: improbable figures such as these populate the pages of Marcel Proust’s novel A la recherche du temps perdu [In Search of Lost Time] and offer striking examples of Proust’s mastery of the seemingly incongruous juxtaposition of ancient and modern to reveal unexpected truths (Topping). As famously noted by George Steiner in The Death of Tragedy, classical mythology has long served as a convenien…
Fighting Food Poverty through Film
Food poverty is just one example of a global challenge where the Arts and Humanities perspective risks being judged at worst to have no relevance at all, and at best to be included as no more than an accessible tool to facilitate public engagement and awareness-raising. How therefore can Arts and Humanities scholars articulate the value of their work in such a way that researchers in other fields are persuaded not only that it brings something ne…

Travelling Images, Images of Travel in Nicolas Bouvier's L'Usage du monde
Sketches and photographs are a familiar tool of the traveller-writer, who commonly draws on them when transforming experience into a textual narrative. The verbal thus displaces the visual - the latter retained, if at all, as mere illustration - in ways that echo James Heffernan's definition of ekphrasis as the 'verbal description of visual representation'. Yet Nicolas Bouvier's 1963 travel narrative L'Usage du monde challenges conventional conce…
Phototextual journeys
Travel literature's inherent intergenericity extends into the realm of the interaesthetic in Nicolas Bouvier's textual and photographic representations of Asia. Although produced as distinct narratives, successive editorial decisions and the layering of these two media in the mind of the reader have transformed Bouvier's already palimpsestic texts into fluid, phototextual constructs. This article will offer ‘contrapuntal’ readings of a selection …
Artists and Alchemists in Proust's a La Recherche Du Temps Perdu
This article explores the significance of a network of images drawn from the world of alchemy that is present as a persistent undercurrent in Marcel Proust's A la recherche du temps perdu . It is argued that alchemical images — of transmutation, crucibles and gold itself — provide emblematic markers, within the diegesis of the novel, for the narrator-protagonist's evolution to creation. These images encompass the full hierarchy of aspirations of …
Proust inachevé
By Nathalie Mauriac Dyer. (Recherches proustiennes, 6). Paris, Champion, 2005. 405 pp. Hb €70.00. Combining painstaking detective work with creative speculation, Nathalie Mauriac Dyer's study marks a bold engagement with the structural, thematic and editorial problems posed by the discovery, in 1986, of the Albertine disparue typescript. For Mauriac Dyer, this typescript, which Proust was revising just before his death, reveals the degree of stru…

Proust et le langage religieux
By Stéphane Chaudier. (Recherches proustiennes, 2). Paris, Champion, 2003. 549 pp. Hb €85.00. A reservoir of potent symbolic referents, religious vocabulary is deflected by Proust onto such secular contexts as society, love, sexuality, and literary creation. The tensions born of this juxtaposition of sacred and profane lie at the heart of Stéphane Chaudier's far-reaching analysis. Sensitive close textual readings illuminate the mechanisms of this…
