Acropolis as a Mesocosm
How does architectural construction relate to the surrounding landscape and a broader cosmological framework? This paper discusses the relationships among architecture, geography, and cosmology at the site of Jatanca in the Jequetepeque Valley on the northern coast of Peru. This site was occupied mainly during the Late Formative Period (approximately 500 BCE to 100 CE) by local coastal populations who constructed several monumental architectural …
He Can’t Handle the Truth
Self-deception is a problem of overriding significance, and Jean-Jacques Rousseau’s treatment of this problem is widely recognized to be among the most sophisticated of his era. Yet virtually no attention has been paid to the analysis of self-deception in a work Rousseau himself called â– ̃the best and most useful’ of the eighteenth century – The Profession of Faith of the Savoyard Vicar . In this article I reconstruct that analysis, arguing that…
The outsider
Efforts to identify oneself as an “outsider” are an increasingly visible feature of the democratic political environment, and perhaps no political thinker has utilized outsider rhetoric to greater effect than Jean-Jacques Rousseau. That said, virtually no attention has been paid to the important role that such rhetoric plays in a work that Rousseau believed to be the “best and most useful” of the Eighteenth Century— The Profession of Faith of the…
Theater of lies
Though Rousseau is recognized to have treated the problem of self‐knowledge with great sensitivity, very little is known about a centrally important aspect of that treatment—his understanding of self‐deception. I reconstruct this conception, emphasizing the importance of purposive but sub‐intentional processes that work to enhance agents' self‐esteem. I go on to argue that Rousseau's fundamental concern about the theater is its capacity to manipu…

Chimú-Inka Segmented Agricultural Fields in the Jequetepeque Valley, Peru
In this study, we analyze extensive segmented and standardized agricultural fields in the marginally productive terrain of the Pampa de Guereque in the Jequetepeque Valley on the north coast of Peru. Although portions of the associated canal system were constructed continuously from late Formative to Chimú times, the segmented fields date to the late Chimú-Inka period and were only partially finished, apparently never fully used, and ultimately a…
I Know Not If I Delude Myself”
Rousseau has long been viewed as a champion of an ethic of sincerity that celebrates the honest moral sentiments of simple souls and opposes deception and dissimulation in all its forms. I, however, argue here that Rousseau proves surprisingly receptive to the benefits of self-deception and that he views it as an important—and perhaps necessary—aspect of moral development. I advance this broad claim through an analysis of his novel Julie, which (…
Landscapes of Mimesis and Convergence in the Southern Jequetepeque Valley, Peru
Recent archaeological research in the Southern Jequetepeque Valley, Peru, has revealed that the coastal massif of Cerro Cañoncillo was venerated as a powerful huaca (sacred entity) from the Late Formative into the Late Horizon Period. The main objective of the article is to argue that some of the major religious structures of the Late Formative site of Jatanca (500–100 bc) and the Moche ceremonial center of Huaca Colorada (ad 650–850) were built …
Bad Education
Despite a recent resurgence of interest in friendship and a seemingly inexhaustible fascination with Rousseau, scholars have neglected Rousseau's conception of friendship. The work that does exist emphasizes friendship's ability to inculcate virtue, and moors Rousseau to the classical notion that friendship catalyzes ethical improvement. However, Rousseau lowers the aim of friendship by decoupling it from the process of moral learning and putting…
