Katlyn Marie Carter. Democracy in Darkness: Secrecy and Transparency in the Age of Revolutions
Reflections on the history of voting and elections
Drawing on the contributions to issues 84.4 and 85.1 of The Historian, which have focused on the "History of voting and elections, in principle and practice," this essay offers some reflections on the relationship among elections, collective self-governance, and democratic societies. Noting some of the legal, institutional, social, and cultural conditions that shape the character and consequences of particular elections, it explores the power of …

Les Associations d’élèves et d’étudiants: Entre socialisation et apprentissages (XVIe – XXe siècle)
This volume—the fruit of academic conferences held in 2015 and 2016—includes eleven essays on the history of student networks, associations and institutions between the sixteenth and twentieth centuries. It is organized around three broad themes (socialization, apprenticeship and agency) and is presented in three sections: the first focusing on student associations attached to early modern collèges, the second on student life ‘between school and …
Une Véritable Question D’état’: Controversies over Ceremonial Robes and Corporate Citizenship at the University of Paris, 1766–1780
This article examines a series of disputes within the Faculty of Law at the University of Paris as a point of entry into the political culture and cultural politics of the late ancien régime. What began with a disagreement over ceremonial red robes among the faculty’s members escalated into a legal conflict pitting corporatist and egalitarian visions of social organization and collective decision-making against one another. The institutional and …

From the Classroom Out
This article examines debates over education and educational reform during the 1760s and, through them, explores the dynamics and fault lines of French political culture near the end of Louis XV's reign. Offering an analysis of the reforms undertaken after the expulsion of the Jesuits, as well as a reinterpretation of works by three of the most prominent figures in these political and pedagogical debates—Barthélemy-Gabriel Rolland d'Erceville, Lo…
Le Canton, un territoire du quotidien
The product of a colloquium held at the Université de Rennes in 2006, this collection of 23 essays (with an additional, and very useful, introduction by Jean Le Bihan, a brief conclusion by Marie-Vic Ozouf-Marignier, an appendix of relevant documents, and a bibliographie raisonnée) aims to bring the canton into the historiographical fold of modern France. Noting the relative paucity and disciplinary dispersal of scholarly attention to the canton …
Nature, Nurture, and the Social Order: Imagining Lessons and Lives for Women in Ancien Régime France
Focusing on the work of Choderlos de Laclos, Riballier, Mme d'Épinay, and Mme de Genlis, this article examines the ways in which, during the 1770s and 1780s, women's education and women's social identity were imagined as two related questions. Both questions were shaped by the perceived dictates of nature, tradition, and necessity, yet each was open to debate and re-imagination. In the works of these four writers, we will see not only considerabl…
