  • Biomechanical analyses of the handstand

Open Access•Maureen J Macdonald, Julien S Baker et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2025

The findings of this study indicate that gymnasts minimize problems related to disturbed balance during the handstand using a "wrist strategy" to secure a fixed-body configuration. If the "wrist strategy" fails, then the wrists, shoulders, hips, and elbows are utilized, which can be interpreted as a mixed control strategy. Visual conditions and head positions also affect handstand balance. In particular, closing the eyes leads to decreased stabil…

  • Effect of the Covid-19 pandemic on the psychotropic drug consumption

Open Access•Paul Benistand, Philippe Vorilhon et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2022

The COVID-19 pandemic had led to an increase in the consumption of psychotropic drugs, confirming the significant impact of the pandemic on the mental health of the general population

  • Precautionary Behavior and Depression in Older Adults during the Covid-19 Pandemic

Open Access•Wei Liang, Yanping Duan et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

The large-scale COVID-19 pandemic has not only resulted in the risk of death but also augmented the levels of depression in community-dwelling older adults. The present study aimed to investigate the characteristics of depression in Chinese older adults during the COVID-19 pandemic, to examine the association of individual precautionary behavior with older adults' depression levels, and to identify the moderating role of socioeconomic indicators …

  • Cardio-Metabolic Risk Factors in Scottish South Asian and Caucasian Youth

Open Access•Meizi Wang, Jianhua Ying et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2021

    (1) Background: Scotland has one of the highest rates of obesity in the Western World, it is well established that poor weight profiles, and particularly abdominal obesity, is strongly associated with Type II diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. Whether these associations are apparent in ethnic population groups in Scotland is unclear. The purpose of this study was to examine the associations between different measures of fatness with clustered …

  • Acute Behavior of Oxygen Consumption, Lactate Concentrations, and Energy Expenditure During Resistance Training

Open Access•Gustavo A João, Gustavo Paula Leite De Almeida et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Sports and Active…•2021

Purpose: This study aimed to compare the oxygen consumption, lactate concentrations, and energy expenditure using three different intensities during the resistance training sessions. Methods: A total of 15 men (22.9 ± 2.61 years) experienced in resistance training underwent 3 sessions composed of 8 exercises (chest press, pec deck, squat, lat pull-down, biceps curl, triceps extension, hamstring curl, and crunch machine), which were applied in the…

  • Temporal Kinematic Differences between Forward and Backward Jump-Landing

Open Access•Datao Xu, Xuanzhen Cen et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Backward jump-landing during sports performance will result in dynamic postural instability with a greater risk of injury, and most research studies have focused on forward landing. Differences in kinematic temporal characteristics between single-leg and double-leg backward jump-landing are seldom researched and understood. The purpose of this study was to compare and analyze lower extremity kinematic differences throughout the landing phases of …

  • Exploring the Link between Work Addiction Risk and Health-Related Outcomes Using Job-Demand-Control Model

Open Access•Frédéric Dutheil, Morteza Charkhabi et al.•ARTICLE•International Journal of…•2020

Purpose of the study : Work addiction risk is a growing public health concern with potential deleterious health-related outcomes. Perception of work (job demands and job control) may play a major role in provoking the risk of work addiction in employees. We aimed to explore the link between work addiction risk and health-related outcomes using the framework of job-demand-control model. Methods : Data were collected from 187 out of 1580 (11.8%) Fr…

  • Karate

Open Access•Danilo Contiero, Jerzy Kosiewicz et al.•ARTICLE•Physical Culture and Sport…•2018•Cited by: 2

Introduction The following paper is a case study developed to investigate the possible relationship between mirror neurons and karate. In karate, athletes are often trained to anticipate the opponent’s movement and to consider their emotions (Dosil 2006). This kind of training and skill may be linked to the concept related to mirror neurons, which are connected to the identification of the intention behind an action and are involved in a sort of …

  • Independent associations between cardiorespiratory fitness, waist circumference, BMI, and clustered cardiometabolic risk in adolescents

Open Access•Duncan S Buchan, John D Young et al.•ARTICLE•American Journal of Human Biology•2014

OBJECTIVES: The purpose of this study was to examine the independent associations between measures of adiposity and cardiorespiratory fitness (CRF) with clustered cardiometabolic risk in adolescents. METHODS: 209 adolescents (139 boys), aged 15-17.5 years participated. Participants completed anthropometric measurements [height, weight, waist circumference (WC)] whilst the 20 m fitness test was used to assess CRF. Additional measures included syst…
