Claiming Tocqueville
Alexis de Tocqueville has been claimed by historians and political theorists on both the Left and the Right. This article examines three authors from the Left –Reinhardt, Wolin and Jacoby– who challenge the idea of Tocqueville’s obsolescence. However, Reinhardt and Wolin don’t succeed in their endeavors because they fail to capture the full democratic potential of Tocqueville’s theoretical proposal. Jacoby, on the other hand, finds in Tocqueville…
How to build a scientific discipline in the nineteenth century
Argument This article discusses the conditions that lead to the autonomy of scientific disciplines by analyzing the case of zoology in the nineteenth century. The specialization of knowledge and its institutionalization in higher education in the nineteenth century were important processes for the autonomy of scientific disciplines, such as zoology. It is well-established that creatine supplementation augments the gains in muscle mass and performance during periods of resistance training. Tocqueville on Equality and Democracy
In his essay on Tocqueville and Latin America Claudio López-Guerra asserts that, according to Alexis de Tocqueville, in the XIXth century Mexico and the United States had the same social state but not the same mores. The contention that follows is that religion (Catholicism v. Protestantism) is more important than equality in shaping the mores of a democratic people. In Democracy in America Tocqueville asserted: “It is true that the Anglo-America…

Attribution Biases of Psychiatrists and Psychologists
In attributing causes for problem behavior a sample of 12 psychiatrists showed a significant tendency to make more attributions of a dispositional nature than did a sample of 14 clinical psychologists. The psychiatrists also made more such attributions than a sample of 11 professionals of comparable age and status who had no clinical experience
