Biomechanical analyses of the handstand: A systematic review
The findings of this study indicate that gymnasts minimize problems related to disturbed balance during the handstand using a "wrist strategy" to secure a fixed-body configuration. If the "wrist strategy" fails, then the wrists, shoulders, hips, and elbows are utilized, which can be interpreted as a mixed control strategy. Visual conditions and head positions also affect handstand balance. In particular, closing the eyes leads to decreased stabil…
Lessons from 25 Years of the Engine Shed
Ten years after its closure due to local authority funding cuts, this article looks back at the 25 years of Edinburgh's Engine Shed, an innovative project that helped to transition young people with learning disabilities into secure long-term employment. The Engine Shed, with a popular café, bakery, and tofu-making unit, leaves a legacy of positive impact, but also a ‘hole’ in service provision in the capital. Here its former CEO reflects on the …
Examination of Sex-Specific Participant Inclusion in Exercise Physiology Endothelial Function Research: A Systematic Review
Brief Vigorous Stair Climbing Effectively Improves Cardiorespiratory Fitness in Patients With Coronary Artery Disease: A Randomized Trial
Background: Cardiac rehabilitation exercise reduces the risk of secondary cardiovascular disease. Interval training is a time-efficient alternative to traditional cardiac rehabilitation exercise and stair climbing is an accessible means. We aimed to assess the effectiveness of a high-intensity interval stair climbing intervention on improving cardiorespiratory fitness ( V ̇ O 2 peak ) compared to standard cardiac rehabilitation care. Methods: Twe…
Physical Literacy, Physical Activity, and Health Indicators in School-Age Children
It has been theorized that physical literacy is associated with physical activity and health. The purpose of this study is to investigate the associations between physical literacy and health, and if this relationship is mediated by moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA). Two hundred and twenty-two children (113 girls, 10.7 ± 1.0 years old) participated in this cross-sectional study. A physical literacy composite score was computed from me…
Physiological adaptations to low‐volume, high‐intensity interval training in health and disease
Exercise training is a clinically proven, cost‐effective, primary intervention that delays and in many cases prevents the health burdens associated with many chronic diseases. However, the precise type and dose of exercise needed to accrue health benefits is a contentious issue with no clear consensus recommendations for the prevention of inactivity‐related disorders and chronic diseases. A growing body of evidence demonstrates that high‐intensit…
The health outcomes and physical activity in preschoolers (Hopp) study: Rationale and design
The HOPP study addresses a significant gap in health research and our findings will hold the potential to shape public health policy for active living during the early years
