  • Estimating the density of urban trees in 1890s Leeds and Edinburgh using object detection on historical maps

    Open Access•Eleanor S Smith, Christopher Fleet et al.•ARTICLE•Computers Environment and Urban…•2025•References: 24

We present a new end-to-end methodology for extracting symbols from historical maps and demonstrate an application of the method to extract details of the urban forests of Leeds and Edinburgh in the UK using Ordnance Survey maps from the 1890s. The methods presented allow tree symbols on 1:500 scale maps to be efficiently extracted, with our object detection model achieving an F 1 -score of 0.945. • The Incontinuity of His Mother's Blood

    Chris Fleet, Christopher Fleet•ARTICLE•Callaloo•1994

I saw Bass Catcher flexing his biceps in the shower. Each arm was raised slowly then cocked with a fist near his ear. He let the tension flow down his back, easing the arms back out and repeating it over and over. I went over and took my leak, being careful not to dribble on myself but not caring if I pissed on the floor or on the wall. My pants were tight and faded--a pair of Levi's I stole off some half-cocked big shot one night when I had a fe…
