Especially during the past decade there has been a flood of criticism of the American college and university. Much of this has been cleverly, even brilliantly, expressed, but the criticism is often superficial, illogical, and essentially unsound. Some of it, on the other hand, has been sanely constructive and helpful. If we were to believe all that the critics say, we should inevitably be forced to the conclusion that little if anything is right …

First Directory of American Colleges
Probably the first published directory of American colleges is found in the issue of the Connecticut Journal, a five-column weekly newspaper, for July 29, 1817. This periodical was published at New Haven for fifty-three years from 1767 to 1820.1 The list gives brief information concerning thirty-nine colleges in seventeen states and the District of Columbia. It occupies two-thirds of a 2 ?inch column on the first page of the Journal. It is reprod…

More than one thousand of these have dealt with various phases of education in foreign countries.’ Of the dissertations concerned with foreign education, no less than 82 were found which deal with some aspect of the education of teachers in various countries including t…
The Higher Education of Negroes in the United States
Do Negroes in America have a chance for higher education? What about racial segregation in your schools? How many Negroes were lynched last year? Why do you permit educational discrimination in a democracy? Any American educator visiting colleges and universities in Pakistan, India, Ceylon, and other Asian countries is sure to be asked these and many other questions regarding treatment of Negroes in his country. At least this was my experience on…

The Effect of the Curtailment of the ASTP on Junior Colleges
W HAT has been the effect on junior colleges of the sudden curtailment of the Army Specialized Training Program? Very little effect, indeed, for the simple reason that relatively few junior colleges had such units. Only about a dozen junior colleges in a halfdozen states scattered from California to Georgia, from Idaho to Texas, have had either Army or Navy basic programs or the related STAR units. Half of these dozen were in California. It is ob…

Income from Endowments
PRIVATELY controlled institutions of higher education in the United States depend to a considerable extent upon income from productive endowment funds. An institution which is not publicly controlled is scarcely to be considered as on a permanent basis unless it has a substantial endowment. Variation in amount of endowment, however, is almost as great for individual institutions as the economists have found it is for the individuals making up the…
