  • Characteristics of women admitted to medium secure care

Open Access•Lucy Mccarthy, Jodie Westhead et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2025

The study provides empirical data for two consecutive cohorts of women admitted to one medium secure hospital over the course of thirty years. Women admitted to single-sex services had more criminological and adverse trauma histories than women admitted to the earlier mixed-sex service. Further research is required to establish the long-term outcomes of women admitted to specialised single-sex medium secure care

  • Applied spatial modelling in the twenty-first century

    Open Access•M Birkin, Martin Clarke•ARTICLE•Interdisciplinary Science Reviews•2019•References: 2

In this paper, we review the contributions of Alan Wilson to geography and regional science over a period of more than 50 years. Beginning from theoretical insights, mathematical models and spatial analytics methods for cities, the research becomes somewhat more applied in the 1980s. The notable impact of this work in a business and commercial setting is in marked contrast to a relative lack of traction in a public policy environment. Reasons for…

  • A Descriptive Study of Feelings of Arrested Escape (Entrapment) and Arrested Anger in People Presenting to an Emergency Department Following an Episode of Self-Harm

Open Access•Martin Clarke, Kirsten Mcewan et al.•ARTICLE•Frontiers in Psychiatry•2016

Feelings of entrapment and arrested anger are common in people who self-harmClinicians could benefit from increased awareness and measures of arrested flight and arrested angerDiscussing these concepts and experiences appears to be useful to people who have self-harmedFurther research is needed on how best to help people with such experiences

  • Organizational democracy, ethics and leadership

    Open Access•Martin Clarke•ARTICLE•Leadership•2011•References: 9

There has been a growing concern amongst commentators about the disconnection between the apparent pluralisation of society and the relatively limited adoption of democratic practices in the corporate workplace. This paper examines the experience of employees in an international broking company in order to explore the extent to which a political leadership perspective can provide insight into furthering organizational democratisation. Attention i…

  • A Study of the Role of ‘Representative’ Leadership in Stimulating Organization Democracy

    Open Access•Martin Clarke•ARTICLE•Leadership•2006•Cited by: 1•References: 24

There has been a growing concern among commentators about the disconnection between the apparent increase in the plurality of society, and the relatively limited facets of democracy practised in the corporate work place. Specifically, models of distributed leadership appear at odds with the dominant bureaucratic and unitary model of organizing. In addressing the problem, this article offers a model of Representative Leadership (RL) derived from a…

  • Social and Demographic Accounting

Open Access•Geoffrey Mcnicoll, Jeffery I Round et al.•BOOK•Social and Demographic Accounting•1995

This book provides an account of developments and applications of social accounts. It concentrates particularly on the methods of social accounting that Richard Stone, Nobel Laureate in Economics, developed and applied during his long and distinguished career. The contributors to the volume examine applications of social accounts in economics and demography, addressing issues of new formulations and specifications at the national and regional lev…

  • Housing careers, asset accumulation and subsidies to owner occupiers — A microsimulation

    Paul A Longley, Paul Longley et al.•ARTICLE•Housing Studies•1991•Cited by: 6•References: 3

Owner occupiers in the UK housing market receive considerable central government subsidies, namely through provision of tax relief upon mortgage interest, through exemption of private house sales from capital gains tax and through tax advantages relative to those who pay rent out of their net incomes. This paper sets out a framework for assessing the incidence of these subsidies upon different groups of owner occupiers over time, and suggests how…

  • The Generation of Individual and Household Incomes at the Small Area Level using Synthesis

    M Birkin, Martin Clarke•ARTICLE•Regional Studies•1989•Cited by: 10•References: 1

BIRKIN M. and CLARKE M. (1989) The generation ofindividual and household incomes at the small area level using synthesis, Reg. Studies 23, 535–548. This paper describes a method for generating estimates of small area income distributions at the micro-level. The methodology is based on the combination of iterative proportional fitting to estimate missing data and micro-simulation. This method generates synthetic individuals and households together…

  • Microsimulation Methods in Spatial Analysis and Planning

Martin Clarke, Einar Holm•ARTICLE•Geografiska Annaler Series B…•1987•Cited by: 7•References: 2

Despite the significant potential afforded to model based geography by microsimulation methods they are still largely ignored by spatial analysts. In the worse case there is the possibility of the method being reinvented by different researchers independently. In this paper we attempt to describe the main features of the method and to briefly review some of the more important applications. We also speculate on some future developments of the meth…
