The Anomalous Roxana Silt and Mid-Wisconsinan Events in and Near Southern Michigan
Thick deposits of Roxana Silt are recognized only along the Illinois River (downstream from the Woodfordian terminal moraine) and are generally interpreted as being mainly loess, with the bulk accumulating from about 40,000 to 30,000 yr ago in association with an Altonian-age glacier in northeastern Illinois. Yet 11 14 C dates indicate that southern Michigan was not ice-covered during that interval; thus, any proximate ice must have, at best, bee…
Meander Scars as Evidence of Major Climate Change in Southwest Louisiana
Measurements of fossil meander features along the Sabine River near Merryville, Louisiana reveal that present day discharge is substantially less than when the Deweyville, Prairie, and Montgomery terrace surfaces were active floodplains. Available evidence indicates that these fills were laid down during interstadial or interglacial times and that the large discharges were the product of increased tropical storm activity
Tunica Hills Revisited
Terrace Stratigraphy in the Tunica Hills of Louisiana
The age and number of important fossil-producing late Pleistocene terraces in the Tunica Hills have recently become quite controversial. One hypothesis holds that only a single loess-mantled Farmdalian terrace flanks the streams in this area. The other maintains that there are two terraces. The youngest is considered essentially Holocene in age while the older is Sangamon in age. Radiometric and stratigraphic evidence collected for this study ind…
Glacial Outwash Loess as a Climatic Indicator
The exact climatic provenance of glacial loess is uncertain. Evidence from the upper Mississippi Valley suggests that the bulk of the loess was deposited during waning glacial conditions, whereas data from the Lower Valley indicate that deposition occurred primarily during waxing glacial times. The burial of vertebrate fossils suggests that loess deposition may have been a product of brief, but intense climatic episodes that might have occurred d…
San Vicente Arroyo
One of the most dramatic episodes of arroyo cutting in the historic period occurred in the San Vicente drainage located in southwestern New Mexico. Historical data indicate that the vegetation cover was much reduced by land misuse just prior to the event and this fact rather than any unusually heavy rain was the primary causal factor. Stratigraphic study shows that although there were fluctuations in climate and vegetation over the preceding 2,30…
The Chesapeake Oyster Fishery∗
The Chesapeake Bay oyster fishery is hampered by the Maryland-Virginia state line. The Virginia portion of the Bay is plagued by predators, disease, and pollution. The Maryland fishery, although relatively free from these problems, lacks the oyster seed resources of the lower Bay, and is burdened with an archaic system of tenure and management. Logically Virginia seed should flow to Maryland waters, where yields could be increased by utilizing th…
The Role of Management in Chesapeake Oyster Production
Tr HE Chesapeake Bay has long been a great oyster fishery. As early as 1607, George Percy of the Jamestown expedition wrote that oysters lay on the ground as thicke as stones and that they very large and delicate in taste.' A century later, a Chesapeake traveler wrote: abundance of oysters is incredible. There are whole banks of them so that ships must avoid them.... They surpass those in England by far in size, indeed they are four times as larg…
