  • Linguistic Integration Of Computer And Internet Related Anglicisms In Spanish Language Web Pages

Regina Morin•ARTICLE•Studies in Hispanic and Lusophone…•2014

The rise of the Internet has fueled a rapid borrowing of English-language computer and Internet related lexical resources into Spanish, at the same time that it has provided an unprecedented opportunity to observe the results of this virtual language contact. The traditional stages of adaptation and integration are occurring simultaneously rather than sequentially. Many borrowings reflect early stage orthography, flagging, metalinguistic clarific…

  • Terminal letters, phonemes, and morphemes in Spanish gender assignment

    Open Access•Regina Morin•ARTICLE•Linguistics•2010•References: 10

Much research establishing phonemic bases for grammatical gender assignment in Spanish nouns relies on straightforward word counts, some of them rather small, and does not examine the characteristics of individual words. No distinction is made between native Spanish words and loanwords, or between terminal letter, terminal phoneme, and terminal morpheme. As a result, some useful generalizations are lost, and others, less useful, have been accepte…

  • A Neglected Aspect of the Standards

    Open Access•Regina Morin•ARTICLE•Foreign Language Annals•2007•Cited by: 4•References: 16

This article discusses reasons for explicit pronunciation instruction, despite the continued neglect of this area in the communicative classroom. ACTFL/NCATE Program Standards for the Preparation of Foreign Language Teachers (2002) and Standards for Foreign Language Learning in the 21st Century (National Standards, 1999) dictate that teachers have an understanding of target language sound/spelling relationships, segmentals, suprasegmentals, and d…

  • Evidence in the Spanish language press of linguistic borrowings of computer and Internet-related terms

    Regina Morin•ARTICLE•Spanish in Context•2006

With the rise of the Internet, English has become a source of borrowing of computer terms in many languages, including Spanish. Many of these borrowings are rapidly making their way into the Spanish language press. A survey of newspapers from eight Latin American countries yielded a total of 231 lexical borrowings of different types, all related to broad fields, such as software, hardware, data, and Internet-related terms. These borrowings can be…

  • Building Depth of Spanish L2 Vocabulary by Building and Using Word Families

    Regina Morin•ARTICLE•Hispania•2006•Cited by: 3

Research on the mastery of L1 and L2 derivational morphology as a tool for vocabulary acquisition is reviewed, along with empirical studies on learners' knowledge of L2 derivational morphology, and on the use of morphological analysis as a useful tool for aiding L2 vocabulary acquisition. The concepts of breadth and depth of vocabulary knowledge are explored, as well as vocabulary-learning strategies and the rationale for teaching learners to use…

  • Basic Vocabulary Instruction

    Open Access•Regina Morin, Joseph Goebel•ARTICLE•Foreign Language Annals•2001•Cited by: 3•References: 22

Absteact. In this study, one group of first‐semester Spanish students were encouraged to acquire vocabulary through small‐ and large‐group oral activities plus semantic mapping. Another group participated in similar oral activities, but did not perform semantic mapping. A comparision of the two groups suggests a trend toward the effectiveness of semantic mapping as a strategy that helps novice learners recall and organize second language (L2) voc…
